Earth Day – 2024 Programmes at Debrecen Zoo

For more than half a century, Earth Day has been celebrated on the 22nd of  April to raise awareness of our shared responsibility to preserve our natural environment. To mark the occasion, on the 22nd of April, Debrecen Zoo is inviting groups of pre-school and school children, and on the 28th of  April, the Zoo is awaiting  families to join a series of themed activities.

22 April programmes
9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. – Meet the endangered species of the Zoo! (Exercise sheets can be picked up at the zoo’s main cash desk.)
9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. – Be an ethologist! Observe the species in the zoo and record your experiences.
9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. – Palm oil demonstration (Gibbon House)

There will be interactive zoo education sessions organised for preschoolers and school groups. The optional topics to choose from are:
– “Protected animals in the world”
– “Introduction to responsible animal husbandry” – Palm House
– “At home, at home – Getting to know the birds of our country and our native domestic animals”
– “Animal friendly children – What can we do to protect our planet?”

Bookable times for education sessions are 9:00 a.m. -10:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

All programme elements are free with a zoo pass.

28 April programmes – the programmes are continuous between 10:00 a.m. – 3 p.m.
10:00 a.m. – 2 :00 p.m. – Be Earth Conscious (Gibbon House)
10:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. – Introduction to the birds of the African Gibbon
11:00 a.m. – “A clean, colourful world” – A presentation on selective waste collection by  Kuckó Art Studio
11:30 a.m.  – Concert of the Debrecen Music School’s  “Waste-bin concert”
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Responsible animal husbandry at the House of Knowledge venue
13:30 p.m. – 14:15 p.m.  – Introduction of our large carnivores departing from the North – Chinese leopard runway
2:00 p.m.  – Let’s compost – Expert advice with demonstration
2:00 p.m. – Let’s go green – Plant together!
2:00 p.m. – The story of the blue planet – live storytelling with Aniko Rácz
2:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Presentation of exotic reptiles and arthropods to keep at home
