Animals’ World Week

Since 1931, the World Animal Day has been held every year on October 4, the day of St. Francis of Assisi, who is also revered as the patron saint of animals. It has been a tradition for many years that on the occasion of this important day the Zoo is  try to bring the many wonders of the living world closer to children's groups and families with guided tours and activities, and this year, within the Animal Protection Theme Week and the Great Forest Week, they are waiting for visitors with thematic programs for two weeks, between October 2 and 15 . Every weekday, kindergarteners and schoolchildren are invited to zoo pedagogy sessions and green craft sessions, for which registration is required at least 4 days in advance via the email address zooped@zoodebrecen.hu. Great Forest Week

The Great Forest in Debrecen holds immense significance for all its residents. Often referred to as the city's "lung," it provides a sanctuary for recreation, relaxation, and sports, deeply woven into the fabric of its historical identity. Nationally, the Nagyerdő is a cherished treasure, an iconic symbol of Debrecen, much like the Reformed Great Temple or Calvinist Rome. Eighty-one years ago, on October 10, 1939, the Great Forest of Debrecen received its protected status, marking it as the country's very first entry in the Hungarian Nature Register. For the fourth time, a series of programs presenting Hungary's most beautiful forest, the Great Forest in Debrecen, will be organised by the Great Forest Society, the Debrecen Store of Value (Értéktár) Committee, the Future of Debrecen and several cooperating partners between October 9 and 15, 2023 under the title Great Forest Week. Great Forest Week Walking Tours and Running Activities

Heart- friendly Thematic Walks on 10th and 12th October at 8.30a.m. Walks will be organised 2 times during the Great Forest Week by “Move Debrecen” (Mozdulj Debrecen). The departure location is the Fog Theater (Ködszínház/Aquaticum tram stop), the route is 4 km long around Nagyerdő Stadium. The Hedgehog and the Squirrel – Exhibition of the Natural History Museum

As part of the Great Forest Week event series, hedgehogs and squirrels take centre stage in the Natural History Museum's exhibition. Visitors can take a peek into the world of two iconic forest animals, the hedgehog and the squirrel, get to know their habits, and discover their everyday life. The exhibition can be viewed from until 10th November. The opening of the Nature Museum's exhibition the Hedgehog  and the Squirrel is on 11th October at 2 p.m. Greetings are given by Dr. János Mazsu, the president of Great Forest Society. The exhibition will be opened with an interactive tour guide Zoltán Váradi, Head of the Natural History Museum. From 11th October until 10th November. Exhibition of contemporary painters Anikó Éberling and Zsuzsa Szász

The exhibition of contemporary painters Anikó Éberling and Zsuzsa Szász is open free of charge at the Kölcsey Centre until the 20th of October 2023. The exhibition is open daily from 10. a.m. to 6 p.m. during the opening hours of the Kölcsey Centre, and until 7 p.m. during evening events. Deputy Mayor of Debrecen István Puskás will give a welcome speech at the opening of the exhibition on the 27th of September at 6 pm.
