The wines awarded the title of “Wines of Debrecen 2025” will be revealed soon. Once again, the best wines will be selected in seven categories. The winning wines will be presented in local restaurants and at gastronomic events.

The past, present, and future of Hungarian wine is a common cause, the cause of the Hungarian nation. This is what the professional journal Debreceni Borozó, 15 years old in 2025, thought 10 years ago and still thinks today when it approached the leadership of the second largest municipality in Hungary, the city of Debrecen, to support the Debrecen City Wine initiative.

Since 2015, with the support of the City of Debrecen, the outstanding achievements of Hungarian winemakers are judged and recognised every year with the honorary title “Wines of Debrecen” with the help of international and Hungarian wine judges.

During the two-round wine judging, the most excellent Hungarian wines are selected, representing the Carpathian Basin’s wine culture at the city’s official events and gastronomic programs, on the wine lists of local restaurants, and as representation gifts. This initiative continued this year. In the first round, winemakers, wine judges and wine journalists invited by Debreceni Borozó rated more than 450 wines from 120 wineries in 17 wine regions. Only the wineries with the best results were invited to the second round. On Wednesday, a prestigious jury of renowned personalities from the Hungarian wine community will select the winning wines from 123 entries from 30 wineries in 14 wine regions. The judging and ranking will follow an international 100-point scoring system. Top wines will be named in seven categories (white, red and rosé, premium white and red, sparkling and dessert).

Deputy Mayor of Debrecen István Puskás said at the event’s opening ceremony that the title “Wines of Debrecen” is worthy of Debrecen’s importance, as it has a gastronomic and cultural role and promotes wine culture.

Zita Dobos, Managing Director of the Főnix Event Organiser, which is responsible for presenting the City Wines, emphasised that the wines awarded the title are the pride of the city and bring people together.

The final results of the “Wines of Debrecen” 2025 evaluation and ranking are scheduled to be announced in January.
