Two new flights took off at Debrecen Airport in two days

Since Sunday, the capital of Crete, Heraklion, has also been accessible by direct charter flight from Debrecen International Airport and another flight also departed from Debrecen on Monday. Tirana, Albania, was previously not directly accessible from Debrecen.

This charter also runs once a week. The Managing Director of Itaka Hungary Travel Agency, which operates the service, says Albania is an ideal destination for those looking for relaxation in more ways than one.

“Albania is an undiscovered treasure, a very good destination and a very short flight from Debrecen, just over an hour away,” Vytautas Kaikaris said.

Flights from Debrecen International Airport to Herkalion will be available until 27 September, and flights to Tirana are expected to be available until 29 September.

10 reasons why the travel agency recommends Albania

Variety of beaches

  • Albania offers both wide, sandy beaches and small, rocky coves, so it has something for everyone.

The European Maldives

  • The twin islands in Ksamil, in southern Albania, are referred to as the “European Maldives”. The crystal clear water, fine sand and islands accessible by boat, kayak or motorboat are a paradise for beach lovers.

Regional cuisine

  • Albania offers a delicious combination of Balkan, Greek, Turkish and Italian cuisine. Traditional dishes from the mountainous regions, as well as fresh fish and seafood, are a real treat for culinary connoisseurs. In addition, prices in restaurants are quite low compared to other Mediterranean countries – a portion of moules or pasta with seafood can be purchased for around 6-8 euros.

Albanian people

  • Albanian people are hospitable and helpful. If there is a language barrier, they will explain with signs or lead you by the hand to someone who knows how to help. Due to more than 50 years of isolation caused by the communist regime, Albanians are very curious about the rest of the world, which was inaccessible to them until recently.

Monuments

  • Almost everywhere in Albania there are objects of cultural and historical value. In many places you can see monuments from the Roman, Ottoman or Venetian occupations side by side, creating an incredibly interesting historical mosaic.

Breathtaking nature

  • Although most tourists come to Albania to go to the beach, more than 70 percent of the country is occupied by mountains.  It is full of hidden lakes, waterfalls and picturesque passes.

Albanian bunkers

  • There are hundreds of thousands of them, literally everywhere: on the beaches, in the mountains, in small villages and in big cities. Some now house avant-garde pubs and museums, but the vast majority are unoccupied. They date back to the time of dictator Hoxha, who feared a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union after breaking ties with Stalin.

Tirana

  • The capital of Albania, which until recently was a drab communist city, is now colourful and original. It is typically full of contrasts, social realist and oriental. It is worth seeing the churches and mosques, the huge Skanderbeg Square, and the famous glass “pyramid”. A great surprise is the excellent National Museum, where the history of Albania is presented in a very professional and interesting way.

Shkodra

  • Shkodra is a multicultural, beautiful city, and an excellent starting point for the nearby Lake Shkoder. The extremely picturesque lake is also a paradise for bird lovers.

Kruja’s Old Bazaar

  • Here, in addition to handicrafts and communist-era souvenirs, you can buy everything from local food, fruit and spirits. The cobblestone streets and views of the mountains and sea guarantee a pleasant stay.
