Large-scale Asphalting Works Have Begun in Debrecen
Large-scale road resurfacing works have begun across the city. The details were presented at one of the affected locations, the car park next to the István Road 19–33 service road, by Mayor László Papp, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, and city councillor András Varga on 12 March 2026.
“Debrecen’s economy has developed to such an extent in recent years that it enables us to implement, on a large scale, developments that are important to residents, even smaller-scale projects,” emphasised Mayor László Papp.
Speaking about the figures, he said that more than HUF 9.2 billion has been allocated this year for the development and improvement of the city’s roads. Large-surface resurfacing will take place on 31 road sections and 12 new roads will be built. In addition, the pavement and stairway programme, which is particularly important for housing estates, will continue this year as well. He noted that the renovations include major transport routes such as Balmazújvárosi Road and Füredi Road, as well as the section from the airport to the motorway access road, but smaller-scale developments are also included.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles pointed out that parking is a daily problem in the Tócóskert district, as several thousand people live in the area. She recalled that when the parking areas were created in the 1970s, their number was based on the number of cars at the time, whereas today a single family may own two or even three vehicles.
The deputy mayor said that the city is always developed in line with the needs of residents, whether the investments are smaller or larger in scale. As she explained, the Fidesz municipal councillors continuously tour the city and report the needs of Debrecen residents, which, thanks to the economic development of the past ten years, can be incorporated into the municipal budget, with increasing amounts allocated to them year by year. “I would also like to thank the residents for always being very open with us during these visits and for sharing their problems, for which we always try to find solutions.”
András Varga, city councillor for the district, said that large-surface resurfacing and new road markings are currently being carried out in nearly 150 parking spaces along the U-shaped service road. He stated that, according to estimates, this will increase parking capacity by 15 to 20 per cent. He added that the renovation will take place in phases so that traffic on the road is not blocked and, depending on weather conditions, it is expected to take around four weeks.
