Tóth Árpád Secondary School Celebrates 70th Anniversary
The school initially opened as a boys’ grammar school, but has since grown into the largest institution in Debrecen. Speaking at the anniversary ceremony, Mayor László Papp said that over seven decades the school has set a long line of generations on their path.
At the event, both current and former students of the grammar school performed. The institution’s founding charter was signed on 1 July 1956. At the anniversary gala, Amália Kircsi Fenyősné explained that in the early 1960s the school began to develop, attracting increasingly able students. According to the headteacher, this is also due to the fact that pupils have always received sincere attention and care. “As a result of this care, a strong sense of attachment developed which has endured to this day. TÁG is a community to which more than ten thousand of us belong, and this is also reinforced by the alumni association,” she said.
At the ceremony, Mayor László Papp highlighted that the school has provided not only knowledge but also a spirit that offers guidance in all areas of life. “”Over the past seventy years, this school has sent a long line of generations out into the world equipped with knowledge, humanity, and values that serve as a guide not only within the classroom walls but in every aspect of life,” the mayor emphasized. He added that in the year of its founding, a community began to take shape that has grown over the past seven decades into one of Debrecen’s most influential educational institutions. He also noted that the school was the first in the country to launch biology–chemistry and English–German courses, and that it is one of ten Hungarian schools eligible to participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
Teaching has taken place in the building on Szombathi István Street since 1996. At the event, Director of the Debrecen School District Centre László Türk spoke about the school’s values. “Sensitivity, refinement and beauty are values that are always needed. Like its namesake, this grammar school not only represents these but also passes them on through generations,” he said. After the spring break, 1,122 pupils resumed their studies at the institution, making Tóth Árpád Secondary School the largest school within the Debrecen School District Centre.
