The University of Debrecen and Béres Pharmaceuticals have signed a cooperation agreement
According to the document, the Hungarian company will now support the education of students at the Faculty of Pharmacy with a scholarship program, among other things, and research cooperation is also planned.
The University of Debrecen and Béres Pharmaceuticals Ltd., as well as the Béres Foundation for a Whole Life Non-Profit Organization, have signed a framework cooperation agreement.
At the signing of the contract, the rector of the University of Debrecen (UD) recalled that when Teva purchased Biogal Pharmaceuticals in Debrecen in 2004, a number of small and medium-sized pharmaceutical enterprises independent of Teva were established in the city and its surroundings. At that time, the university, the Debrecen local government, and the Hajdú-Bihar County Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to establish the Pharmapolis Innovative Pharmaceutical Cluster, which was intended to bring together these pharmaceutical industry players. A cluster-like cooperation system was created, which was soon joined by Richter Pharmaceuticals.
Zoltán Szilvássy added that the University of Debrecen first contacted Béres Pharmaceuticals almost 20 years ago, which received new impetus when the Szolnok Campus was opened.
“Now is the time to document our commitment to each other. This could open a new chapter in which Hungarian research institutes and Hungarian market players can work together on projects that can lead to real market successes.
The University of Debrecen has already provided assistance to many pharmaceutical companies in this regard based on mutual benefits,” Rector Zoltán Szilvássy stated.
Chancellor Zoltán Bács emphasized that the main focus of the institution is the healthcare industry, and accordingly, the related network is constantly being developed.
“There is a long way to produce and buy a product. This can start, for example, with university research and development, followed by production and sales. We would be very happy if the latest university research were included in the market products. The agreement with Béres could have such a benefit,” he said.
The Chancellor expressed his pleasure that, according to the agreement, the Béres Foundation will support talented students of the Faculty of Pharmacy with scholarships in the future.
The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Debrecen, Faculty of Pharmacy (DE GYTK), Ildikó Bácskay, said that the faculty’s goal is to build a multi-stakeholder pharmaceutical ecosystem, and the agreement with Béres fits well into this. Following the agreement, the pharmaceutical company will be able to provide classes to experts who will be able to transfer their knowledge to the students through practical examples.
“It is very important that we participate in research together with Béres Pharmaceuticals. In unity with research, we can provide our students with quality education that will stand the test of time on both the domestic and international markets. In this way, we can provide employers with a truly outstanding supply of experts,” Ildikó Bácskay stated.
President of Béres Pharmaceuticals, Marcell Béres, grandson of József Béres, the inventor of Béres Drops (Bérescsepp), said when signing the agreement that within the framework of the cooperation with the University of Debrecen, they would primarily like to help train pharmacy students with the help of Béres experts, and they are also planning joint drug research and factory visits.
“József Béres was driven forward most in his life by his curiosity, stubborn perseverance, and trust in his peers. This is how a repressed “quack” became a Széchenyi Prize-winning, recognized researcher. Today, we still feed on the principles of József Béres at Béres. At the University of Debrecen, many people are also looking for new things, and continuous innovation is also present here, which is the cornerstone of renewal. I hope that as a result of the cooperation, more József Béres will graduate from the university,” Marcell Béres added.
President of the Béres Foundation, Klára Béres reported that the focus of their activities is on serving the fullness of human life. They consider the balance of physical and mental health important, which also requires high-quality education and development of young people. “And the University of Debrecen, an institution that manages the next generations, helps their lives, and sets them in the right direction, is at the forefront of this,” Klára Béres said.
“I am convinced that by demonstrating the value of talent, we can set an example for young pharmacy students. Talent is there to be utilized by creating value for the benefit of others, and our scholarship helps with this,” Klára Béres stated.
