About the musical works
Kodály’s Dances of Galánta (1933) is one of his most performed orchestral works, blending personal memories with rich folk themes and brilliant orchestration. Inspired by melodies from Galánta and composed for the Philharmonic Society’s anniversary, it captures moods from melancholy to exuberance.
Liszt’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major features three connected movements, showcasing dramatic themes, lyrical passages, and dazzling virtuosity—culminating in a stormy finale.
Dohnányi’s Suite in F-sharp minor (1908) bridges symphonic depth and suite form. Its four movements range from dramatic and playful to lyrical and uplifting, reflecting influences from Brahms to Strauss.
Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, the most famous of his rhapsodies, draws on verbunkos and csárdás traditions. Originally for piano, its orchestral version by Ferenc Doppler highlights both melancholy and brilliance.
