A Weekend of International Celebrations Awaits in Debrecen
The “cívis” city is starting October in the spirit of diversity. Debrecen pays tribute to three nations: German, Korean, and Chinese holidays offer an opportunity to further deepen the relationship between the city, its citizens, the established companies, and foreign employees, the Debrecen German Cultural Forum writes in its announcement.
On the occasion of the Day of German Unity, a celebration will be orgaąnized on October 3 at the Csokonai Forum Simor Ottó Orpheum between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. The Oberon Company will present the German play Bündeltanz/Batyutánc.The performance tells the story of the deportation of Germans from Hungary in German, and a Hungarian-language text helps with understanding. The production creates a theatrical mix of the actors’ improvisations, Swabian musical traditions, and historical memory. Before the program begins, Mayor László Papp and Julia Gross, the Ambassador of Germany, will deliver welcome speeches.
Participation is free, but registration is required; interested parties can register here for the event.
In parallel with the events, the Oktoberfest Debrecen will take place between October 1 and 4, where guests can watch Swabian-Hungarian dances and taste Bavarian beers from 7:30 p.m.
We can get to know the traditions and modern face of Korea on October 4 at the Kölcsey Center between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Stage attractions, K-pop dance performances, traditional games, musical instruments, and dress rehearsals will bring Korean culture closer to you. Organizers are the Debrecen King Sejong Institute, the Kölcsey Center, and the Debrecen Summer University.
Admission is free—except for the gastronomic demonstration. Please read about the details of the event here.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a celebration of family togetherness for the Chinese. With lanterns in hand and mooncakes as gifts, bonds with loved ones are strengthened—even from afar—with just a glance at the silver-glowing moon. On October 5, at Batthyány Street 24, we can attend children’s programs between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and spectacular stage performances and a street festival from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Organized by OTT-HOME International Meeting Point, the Debrecen Creative Community, the German Cultural Forum, and the Confucius Institute of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen.
The event is free; no registration is required.
