Construction of a new adult and pediatric general practitioner’s office has begun in Nagymacs

The details of the investment, which will be implemented entirely with the financing of the Municipality of Debrecen, were reported on site at a press conference by Deputy Mayor Diána Széles and Erzsébet Katona, the local government representative of the city district, on October 7, 2025.

Diána Széles explained that the Nagymacs district has nearly a thousand residents, and currently, in a building that was previously used as a school and is not in very good condition—the former castle—there is a pediatric and adult general practitioner’s office serving locals. Incidentally, Nagymacs belongs to the same medical district as Kismacs and Ondód, and there are properties serving the care in each of the aforementioned districts.

As the deputy mayor mentioned, the local government provides general practitioner and pediatrician care in a total of 40 properties in Debrecen. Of these clinics, a total of 16 have been renovated in the past ten years. In cases where the application conditions were met, the city used European Union funds, but in several cases, these works could only be carried out from its own municipal funds. From this perspective, it is important that Debrecen has undergone a successful economic development process over the past decade, resulting in an increase in the city’s own local tax revenues, which can be gradually used, for example, to finance the school health activities of the Debrecen Primary Care and Health Development Institute, the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative, and the intensive renovation of medical clinics.

It is important that every citizen of Debrecen can feel directly, in their everyday lives, that this caring city is growing stronger and is growing stronger for their benefit, and that it provides them with appropriate quality services. In Nagymacs, a self-funded investment by the municipality has now begun with the conversion of the building at 39 Kastélykert Street—which previously served as a small school—into a medical office providing quality conditions. Diána Széles also added that as a result of primary health care, the renovation of the medical office at 45 Thomas Mann Street was completed this year, and this program will continue in the future—depending on the financial capabilities of the local government.

According to Erzsébet Katona—who has been the local representative of the district for six years—it is also important for the people of Nagymacs to have a modern, easily accessible, locally available medical office in their district, because to access the healthcare services available in Debrecen, they have to travel at least 35 kilometers there and back. Now, converting the long-unused small school building into a medical office will not only raise the standard of local healthcare services to a new level but also preserve value, as a long-unused property will be given a new function. The building will be completely renovated in accordance with today’s technical requirements and made barrier-free, which is important primarily for the elderly living here; the building’s courtyard will be made suitable for ambulances or patient transport vehicles to drive in if necessary.

Katona Erzsébet emphasized that the number of residents of Nagymacs is constantly growing, including more young people and children, so it is particularly important that the new healthcare institution can provide favorable conditions for the care of not only adults and the elderly but also children. In order to develop the new adult and pediatric general practitioner’s office, the work area was taken over by the contractor “Társ-95” Kft. on September 23, 2025, and it has 8 months to complete the work. According to the representative, the handover is expected to take place in April-May 2026. The total cost of the local government’s own investment is nearly HUF 92 million.
