Day of National Cohesion Commemorations – 2026

On 4 June 2026, the Municipality of Debrecen held a commemoration and wreath-laying ceremony on the occasion of the 106th anniversary of the Treaty of Trianon and Day of National Cohesion.

The commemoration began in the morning at Kossuth Square, where Hungary’s national flag was raised and then lowered to half-mast with the participation of the Hungarian Defence Forces and the Debrecen Garrison Band. In the early evening, following the raising and lowering to half-mast of the National Flag at Bem Square, a ceremonial commemoration entitled “One Nation, One Soul…” took place in front of Émile Guillaume’s sculpture Hungarian Sorrow. The programme featured performances by the Csokonai National Theatre, Ady Endre Grammar School, the Debrecen Folk Ensemble, the Youth Folk Dance Ensemble of Odorheiu Secuiesc, and Homály Banda.

In his commemorative address, Mayor László Papp emphasised that 4 June 1920 was a national tragedy affecting every Hungarian, the consequences of which continue to shape the lives of Hungarians throughout the Carpathian Basin. He highlighted that it was particularly painful that the devastation caused by the imposed peace treaty followed directly after the previously unimaginable destruction of the First World War, and that the Trianon decision fundamentally reflected power interests, while half a million Hungarians were forced to leave their homeland. This was one of the first truly large-scale refugee crises in twentieth-century history of Europe. He added that we now know that the Wilsonian principles and the right to ethnic self-determination, so often invoked by the successor states, were privileges reserved solely for the victorious nations.

The Mayor recalled Debrecen’s historical role and significance. As he explained, following the First World War and the peace treaty, the city did not succumb to despair but instead embarked upon developments and investments to strengthen a spiritually shattered community. This made possible the construction of the university and its clinics, while healthcare and social services were also expanded. He noted that over the past fifteen years, cross-border cooperation has flourished, and with the expansion of the Schengen Area—of which Romania became a member on 1 January last year—it has become much easier to cross the artificial lines that for decades separated Hungarians living on either side of the border. Within the opportunities provided by the European Union, it is primarily up to us whether we can reunite the country and national communities fragmented by history.

László Papp also pointed out that the Hungarian Sorrow monument, erected in 1933, carries a special message. Created by the French artist Émile Guillaume with the support of a donation from a British aristocrat, it contributed to easing tensions between nations. Quoting the words of István Vásáry, the Mayor who unveiled the monument, he recalled: “All the peoples of the world suffer, and there can be no healing until the Hungarian wound has healed.”

László Papp stressed that, on the 106th anniversary of the Treaty of Trianon, it remains essential to strengthen our nation’s cohesion. We must not give way to efforts aimed at dividing Hungarians living within and beyond the country’s borders; rather, we should reinforce the bonds that unite us. He added that, on the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács and the 350th anniversary of the birth of Prince Francis II Rákóczi, it is encouraging to remember that although the Hungarian nation has endured many tragedies throughout its history, it continues to live, grow stronger and prosper in the Carpathian Basin.

He concluded by stating that, if we are to avoid another tragedy, our most important mission is to do everything possible to preserve both our external and internal peace, for the future of Debrecen, the region, the country and the nation. Only in genuine peace is it possible to plan for the future with confidence, achieve sustainable prosperity and enjoy a high quality of life.

Following the speech, wreaths of remembrance were laid at Émile Guillaume’s sculpture Hungarian Sorrow. The event concluded with the Appeal, the Hungarian Bugle Call and the Székely Anthem.
