Debrecen now has eight dog runs for pets and their owners; the newest one is at the Wesselényi housing estate.

“The development of dog runs has gained momentum in recent times, as at the end of last year we opened another dog run in Újkert, and now here, near the Wesselényi housing estate, we can open a visibly very cultured dog run, which is the eighth dog run in Debrecen in recent years,” Mayor László Papp said on site.

The mayor said that the development (fencing, equipment installation) was implemented for a little more than HUF 10 million, and the area consists of two parts. Half of the park is an agility area, while the other is a dog run with no equipment; you can walk, run, and play with your dogs. He pointed out that the dog run that has just been handed over will create conditions in the future for both animals and owners to spend time together safely and have fun.

Animal protection officer and local government representative Edina Szilágyi emphasised that the city administration treats every request related to animal protection as a priority. She believes these small places are no longer just dog runs but community spaces in great need. She noted that they will find additional suitable places to create similar spaces, as they are working to ensure that the two communities, dog owners and non-dog owners, are in an ideal situation in the city that is suitable for everyone and good for everyone.

“In the field of animal protection, we have tried to make a little progress in the past year and give a little momentum in this area as well. In 2025, we will also work to create and organise more exciting programmes and events for everyone. Animal protection will be present at district events,” she highlighted.

Local government representative József Hetei said that keeping animals is an activity or hobby with great responsibility. “Responsibility for the animal, responsibility for the environment, and of course responsibility for those who do not keep animals, these interests must be coordinated,” he underlined. He said that this 1,600 square meters with the agility equipment and the open area is perfectly suitable for dogs in a safe and perfect environment. At the same time, the accessibility of this area is also excellent, as it is accessible not only from the Wesselényi housing estate but also from Petőfi Square or from areas closer to the city centre.
