Debrecen Intermodal Terminal relieves urban transport
Freight trains from Mediterranean ports and Budapest are also running into the Debrecen Intermodal Terminal, which was handed over at the end of July. In the last month, mainly production lines, construction and consumer goods, and metal parts have arrived in the city. However, from the second quarter of 2026, the transport of goods produced in Debrecen will also begin, GYSEV (a Hungarian-Austrian railway company based in Sopron, Hungary) highlighted in response to a request from Médacentrum Debrecen.
Working machines are constantly working at the Debrecen Intermodal Terminal, which was handed over on July 31 in the Northwest Economic Zone. The development was implemented from domestic sources, HUF 11.6 billion. The terminal will have seven pairs of tracks, of which five are currently in operation.
Mayor László Papp highlighted at the handover ceremony that Debrecen is on the verge of an era change in terms of transport development. This sector, and within it logistics, is an area of particular importance for industrial players and the population.
“We can relieve Debrecen’s internal road network in this way. There is a railway transshipment in the area of the current main railway station, but when our predecessors decided to locate this main railway station, that area was still considered the edge of the city, but today we can say that it is in the heart of the city. That is why an important expectation from the city’s citizens is that Debrecen develops in such a way that the economy brings advantages without practically causing disadvantages,” he said.
Zsolt Pete, business development manager of GYSEV Cargo Zrt., told Médiacentrum Debrecen that the first trains arrived in the city in July. At the moment, trains are arriving from the Mediterranean ports and from Budapest. The latter is mainly due to the relief of Highway M3. Typically, production lines are now arriving in the city, but soon, transport may also start from Debrecen. ” It is expected that from the end of March, beginning of April 2026, goods produced in Debrecen will be transported by rail through our intermodal hub,” he revealed.
The Debrecen Intermodal Terminal will play a unique role in Eastern Hungary from 2025 as an open-access, combined transport terminal. In addition to traditional rail freight projects, unaccompanied transport units will also appear, such as containers, swap bodies, and semi-trailers, by handling, lifting and loading, storage, and other logistics and commercial services.
