In the Southern Economic Zone, the Debrecen-Gugyori switching station will now also serve the increased industrial needs. Another significant power grid development has been completed in Debrecen. With the investment, 235 MVA of electrical power will now be available at the Debrecen-Gugyori switching station in the Southern Economic Zone. The development, valued at more than HUF 16.3 billion, was initiated with government support and domestic funds, commencing in the summer of 2023.
At the handover of the station on Thursday, Minister for Energy Csaba Lantos stated that the coordinated investment process makes the power grid suitable for serving growing demands, significantly increasing operational safety and supporting the development of entire regions. “The government is working in the interests of the Hungarian people and economic rationality to reduce import exposures, and we will serve the needs of families and businesses to the greatest extent possible with raw materials extracted within the country’s borders and energy produced in our power plants. We will base the electricity supply mainly on nuclear energy and clean energy sources to ensure that the country’s energy supply is safe, affordable and sustainable in the long term, “ he pointed out.
“The current investment is significant because 235 MVA of power represents a significant step forward for both industrial and residential consumers. In addition, with the handover of the high-voltage station, we have achieved an energy capacity expansion that fully and in the long term ensures the necessary conditions for establishing new factories and promoting the economic development of the region and the country. Strengthening the energy network is an essential condition for being able to respond to future needs sustainably and predictably, whether it is economic growth or the green transition,” owner of the Mészáros Group, Lőrinc Mészáros emphasised.
CEO of OPUS TITÁSZ Zrt. Balázs Torda stated that this investment marks the second such development of outstanding importance in Debrecen, made possible by the development of economic zones. At every point in network development, whether planning or implementation, it is essential for us that, in addition to meeting new demands, the supply to our existing customers is also carried out safely. These investments, both the current and the “MACS” substation to be handed over in 2023, were implemented with the most modern technical content, thus serving the development of the city in the long term,” he highlighted.
“The cooperation between the OPUS group and the city is of strategic importance. The developments in the electricity and natural gas network in recent years, including the one handed over today, are excellent proof that we are an attractive location for businesses to settle here, while also paying attention to the needs and requirements of the people of Debrecen. The current outstanding development affecting our region would not have been possible without the strong alliance of interests between the government, service providers, companies and the people of Debrecen. Together, we can make Debrecen the driving force of the Hungarian economy and, at the same time, a livable regional centre,“ Mayor László Papp emphasised. He highlighted that 12 billion euros of investment have been received in Debrecen in the past ten years. In addition to large companies, the Southern Economic Zone also hosts an SME park. Compared to 2020, Debrecen’s economy is expected to increase sixfold by 2030. The city leader also drew attention to the fact that this development contributes to the security of the energy supply and the long-term stability of Debrecen’s energy system. “This investment, like all significant public utility developments, is not only for large companies, but for Debrecen as a whole. Because it is not only intended to ensure the supply of electrical energy to this industrial and economic zone, but also to serve the energy security of the city as a whole,“ he said.
The construction of the switching station, designed to supply the Southern Economic Zone and its related transmission line system, will enhance the operational safety of the electrical networks in the wider region, thereby improving the security of supply to industrial consumers. The length of the overhead line part of the high-voltage transmission line exceeds 28,000 meters, to which an additional 1,200 meters of underground cable were added from the Debrecen-Józsa substation.
