New Public Collection Exhibition of MODEM titled “What year are you?” opened

The new public collection exhibition, with around 50 different artists presented from the founders to Generation Z marking a new chapter for MODEM, can be visited until the 31st of December 2024. The curators of the exhibition have chosen artists who have shaped MODEM's image over the years, showcasing works from a collection that has evolved over 18 years, incorporating collections, acquisitions, Debrecen International Artists' Colony results, and artist donations. Closing Exhibition of Jewish Communities’ Artist Camp

Works created in the art camp will be on display at the exhibition in the Orthodox Synagogue of Pásti Street. For the second time, an art camp was organised by the Jewish Communities and Organisations of Central and Eastern Europe to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust. “The Debrecen Jewish Quarter is one of the most dynamically developing cultural and religious sacred spaces in the country today. Its role in the culture of Debrecen is indisputable,” says the Debrecen Jewish Community in a statement. Against this background, a new initiative has been announced,  the Debrecen Jewish Quarter Artists' and Artists' Camp will be organised for the first time by the association. The event is by invitation only. Among the artists there are artists from Debrecen, from other parts of the country and from abroad, who are nationally and internationally renowned. 300-year-old Chalices on Display at the Museum of the Reformed College

The new exhibition of the Museum of the Reformed College of Debrecen was opened under the title “Golden Glass to the form of Debrecen” on the 21st of June. The exhibition includes masterpieces by three members of the Büttösi family. In the 18th century, István Büttösi, a master jeweller, and his two sons György and István also worked for the church.  The ornate chalices and bread bowls are not decorations, but are still used for worship and communion. The unique and priceless 300-year-old creations of the Büttös goldsmiths are on display together for the first time. “Many of the works are on display in churches. Here, too, about forty objects come from forty congregations, and these congregations use these beautiful, centuries-old objects. They don't see them as artistic treasures, but as an instrument linked to the Lord Jesus, to their Christian faith," the museum's director Dávid Csorba says. Joint Exhibition entitled “Bird Bone Wonders” opened at Elméleti Galéria

“Bird bone wonders” joint exhibition of photographer and taxidermist opened in Debrecen showcasing exhibitors' love for nature. For many years, Professor Csaba Tóth directed the work of the Urology Clinic, and his medical work, surgeries, publications, books and lectures have made him renowned at home and abroad. The high standard of his medical work was matched by the high standard of his work as a photographer.  Several photo albums of his have been published and the photographer, who was awarded the László Holló Prize, has had solo photo exhibitions in many cities. Albert Krisztián from Karcag belongs to a completely different generation, who started working with preparation as an environmentalist and nature walker, and not with any success, as he is now the owner of the European championship title. The exhibition was  opened on the 21st of June  by Cultural Manager Viktor Csaba Kozák, The Monteverdi Choir of the University of Debrecen, conducted by Ildikó Takács and István Pazár, accompanied by István Pazár on piano. “Great Church in Love” Summer Programmes

“The Great Church in Love” programme series awaits visitors between the 9th of July and the 19th of  August. On Tuesdays throughout a joint discovery walk  participants can learn about the past and present of the Great Church and Debrecen, and even receive a surprise gift. During the series (repeated every Tuesday), the programme is available with a museum-educational ticket, no pre-registration required.  On Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in July and August, the Great Church at sunset programme awaits the lovers of experiences. Within the programme visitors can enjoy the sunset from a height of 40 metres between the two towers and a visit to the church. The guided tour includes the tour of the church, the permanent and temporary exhibitions and the attic, and a panoramic walkway where visitors over 18 can taste the wine of the Great Church (Mészáros Wine Cellar/Red Kadarka and Rosé,  non-alcoholic alternative grape juice). World-famous Exhibition comes to MODEM in August

After the MOMA in New York, the Sphere in Las Vegas and the Grammy Gala, Refik Anadol, who uses artificial intelligence as a paintbrush,  will present his works at the MODEM in Debrecen. “Refik Anadol, the star creator of contemporary art and ever-changing installations generated by artificial intelligence (AI), will exhibit for the first time in Hungary. In 2023, he transformed the Sphere in Las Vegas into the world's largest AI-generated artwork, while the artist's swirling, mesmerising light show was simultaneously admired by the audience of New York's MOMA for a year, and at the end of the year Anadol made the Grammy Gala unforgettable with his spectacular stage world,” according to MODEM's press release. This August, the video work of the acclaimed Turkish multimedia artist Rumi Dreams will visit Debrecen. Farmer-Expo International Agricultural and Food Exhibition

Full-dome Films in English in Agora

Full-dome films are offered in English to the visitors of the Science Centre. Agora Science Centre has one of the largest portable digital planetariums in Hungary that enables visitors to surf in the starry sky, discover the motion of celestial bodies, and familiarise themselves with constellations. It guarantees a lifelong experience for both children and adults. Full-dome films available in English are the following: Europe to the Stars - from 4.00  p.m. every Thursday and Saturday. The Sun, Our Living Star - from 4.00 p.m. every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Participation is possible with the Agora entry ticket. The planetarium has a capacity of 40 people. Exhibition “With Colour and Soul” at the Great Church

László Buka has been retired for some time now, but his creative spirit is undiminished. His next exhibition entitled "With Colour and Soul"  will be opened on the 22nd of June, as part of Night of Museums programmes. László Buka is a distinctive figure in the artistic and cultural life of Debrecen. He is known as a teacher who graduated in mathematics and drawing, but he is also an active painter, whose paintings are present in the world of organic culture, in the organic culture among others marked by the names of Sándor Makoldi and Gábor Pap. But also as a traditionalist, who keeps the tradition of “regölés” (magical, winter  greeting folk custom) alive, and who therefore received the county Prima award in 2008. Exclusive Summer Evening Walks at Debrecen Zoo

The exclusive all-night programme will include a snack to match the occasion and alcoholic or non-alcoholic refreshments on the Samburu panoramic terrace. Summer Film Screenings in the Courtyard of German Cultural Forum

The Sommerkino - Summer Film Screenings will be held on Wednesday evenings from the 17th of July for five weeks in the courtyard of German Cultural Forum at 24 Batthyány Street.  The programme is the latest in a series of #GermanPlusDebrecen cultural events and is an excellent opportunity for the people of Debrecen who love and learn German to speak in German with Germans, Austrians, and Swiss living or working in Debrecen. The Debrecen German Cultural Forum is traditionally showing five films this summer.  Films from German-speaking countries are shown in their original language, but with Hungarian subtitles.
