Since 1931, the World Animal Day has been held every year on October 4, the day of St. Francis of Assisi, who is also revered as the patron saint of animals. It has been a tradition for many years that on the occasion of this important day the Zoo is  try to bring the many wonders of the living world closer to children's groups and families with guided tours and activities, and this year, within the Animal Protection Theme Week and the Great Forest Week, they are waiting for visitors with thematic programs for two weeks, between October 2 and 15 . The Great Forest in Debrecen holds immense significance for all its residents. Often referred to as the city's "lung," it provides a sanctuary for recreation, relaxation, and sports, deeply woven into the fabric of its historical identity. Nationally, the Nagyerdő is a cherished treasure, an iconic symbol of Debrecen, much like the Reformed Great Temple or Calvinist Rome. Eighty-one years ago, on October 10, 1939, the Great Forest of Debrecen received its protected status, marking it as the country's very first entry in the Hungarian Nature Register. For the fourth time, a series of programs presenting Hungary's most beautiful forest, the Great Forest in Debrecen, will be organised by the Great Forest Society, the Debrecen Store of Value (Értéktár) Committee, the Future of Debrecen and several cooperating partners between October 9 and 15, 2023 under the title Great Forest Week. During the Botanical Garden tour, visitors  can admire the flowers that are currently blooming, wander the paths, most of which were made in the first half of the 20th century, under the leadership of botanist Rezső Soó.  Passing by the statue  Mihály Fazekas and Sámuel Diószegi it is relieved how many new plant names were created  thanks to the authors of the Hungarian Herbal Book. For the 45-minute forest walk program suitable clothing is recommended. In case of bad weather, visitors can listen to a lecture on the subject.
