Film screening and Discussion at German Cultural Forum

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust, the German Cultural Forum in Debrecen is launching a long-term awareness-raising programme, the Éva Fahidi Dialogue Programme. The programme's name is linked to Éva Fahidi, a Holocaust survivor from Debrecen and Honorary Citizen of the City of Debrecen. The programme will start on the evening of the 15th of  April with a thematic film, titled The Euphoria of Existence (2019),  screening followed by a discussion. The aim of the event and the programme is to convey the message and legacy of Éva Fahidi “Never hate again!” Director: Réka Szabó Participants of the discussion: Andor Andrási, Réka Szabó and Zsuzsanna Iványi The entrance is free of charge, but registration is required. The piece begins with a dawn sung by five solo cellos, followed by a storm, brass instruments, and a pastoral interlude. The overture ends with a gallop announcing the Swiss patriots' victory over Austrian oppressors. Max Bruch, a late romantic master, is less known in Hungary, except for his violin concerto in G minor. This piece, Op. 88, was written for his son, Max Felix Bruch, and friend Willy Hess. DEAC Family day on the 1st of May

Medical students in the spotlight at the 51st Medical Cup

Medical students are in the spotlight for three days straight at the 51st  Medical Cup between the 19th and 21st of April hosted by the University of Debrecen. The Cup has been organised by 4 medical universities of the country since 1972. The participating universities of the Cup are the University of Szeged, Semmelweis University, the University of Debrecen and the University of Pécs. At the sports event students compete in 5 different sports: basketball, volleyball, Football, Handball  and Waterpolo. This year for the first time women athletes will compete in every sport. Guest Performance of Former Member of the World-Famous Acapella Group Jānis Ozols

One of the main events of the Debrecen Spring Festival will be an evening entitled "Being a guest at the Kodály Choir". Former member of the world-famous Acapella group Cosmos Jānis Ozols graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm with a degree in choral conducting. As a member of Cosmos, he has worked with world-renowned musicians and bands such as Bobby McFerrin, The Real Group, Take 6, Manhattan Transfer, The Hilliard Ensemble, The New York Voices, Flying Pickets, M-Pact and Icelandic music icon Björk. He has achieved many notable achievements both in his home country and abroad, including the Special Prize for Best Conductor at the 13th International Choir Competition in Barcelona and the Best New Conductor at the 49th International Choir Competition. The Kodály Choir, under the direction of conductor Ozols, will take the audience on a musical journey to the Baltic States on the 19th of  April at 7:00 p.m. in the University of Debrecen's Assembly Hall. This collection is recognised as one of the most significant private collections in Hungary, and a major group of works from it have been deposited in the museums of Debrecen. Focusing on the tradition of exhibiting works from the Antal-Lusztig Collection, this selection comprises several hundred national and international works. Dr. Péter Antal, the owner, began his acquisition of monochrome paintings in the mid-2000s, and the collection of more than five hundred works constitutes a separate segment of his collection. An exhibition of students of the DSZC Creative Technical School opens in Újkert

An exhibition titled “Brilliant Mother Nature” on the theme of sustainability by students of the Creative Technology Centre of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre will open in the lobby gallery of the DEMKI Community House in Újkert. The exhibition will be opened by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Matúra és Natúra Foundation, Head of the Debrecen Natural History Museum Zoltán Váradi on the 26th of April at 2.00 p.m. with a welcome speech by Managing Director of DEMKI János D. Halász, and Director of the DSZC Creative Technology Centre Enikő Kovácsné Győrfi. The opening will be attended by students of the institution. Screening of Dracula (1931) in English at Apollo Cinema

Within Retro Day programmes, jointly organised by Vojtina Puppet Theatre and Apollo Cinema to mark Debrecen’s no longer operating Uránia Cinema, founded in 1914, the English language film with Hungarian subtitles, Dracula (1931, 75 min) will be screened at Apollo Cinema on the 24th of April from 7.00 p.m. Since 2001, one of the city's most popular institutions, the Vojtina Puppet Theatre, has been operating in the building of the former Uránia Cinema, which changed its name twice; it was first known as Hungária and then Film Museum. Before the screening, Deputy Mayor Dr. István Puskás and Director of Vojtina Puppet Theatre Anikó Asbóth greet the audience. An accompanying film will be shown before the film Dracula! which is a two-and-a-half-minute segment from the film recorded in 1913, one year after the opening of the Apollo cinema and 1 year before the opening of Uránia. A presentation will be given on the interesting features and significance of the accompanying film by Local history researcher at the Architectural Archives Dr. Péter Horváth.
