April 11 is Debrecen City Day. Every year on this day, the city celebrates the fact that on April 11, 1693, King Lipót I of Hungary granted Debrecen the charter that declared Debrecen a free royal city. There are special programs on this day, museums exhibition, city guided walks, Modem art center events. More details for 2024 City Day are coming.
Culture, Learning, Career - Wunderbar Festival shows why learning German is worthwhile all year round. The national closing event of Wunderbar Festival will be held in Debrecen on the 5th of April at 2.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. and is open to all interested parties. It is a great opportunity to meet diplomatic missions, companies leaders, teachers and students. With music and digital elements, the event will be an interesting and interactive programme, where you can find out why German language is important to German, Swiss and Austrian business leaders in Debrecen, and where diplomatic representatives from German-speaking countries will talk about their countries' relations and cooperation with Hungary. Duration of the programme is 2 hours and the group size admitted at one time is 300. On this festive evening, the 12th of April from 7.00 p.m., the Debrecen Dixieland Jazz Band will perform the best pieces from its colourful repertoire built up over the past 40 years. In addition to early jazz gems and Hungarian songs inspired by American swing, they will also perform their own compositions. Invited guests at this special concert will be jazz singer Nikoletta Szőke, winner of the 2005 Shure Montreux Jazz Voice, and Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, jazz pianist and the founder of the ensemble, saxophonist Zoltán Gyarmati. Exhibition titled “ Reflections - Music Painted” opens in the Music Gallery of the University of Debrecen. The cultural programme of the Public Culture Secretariat of the University of Debrecen continues with a fine arts exhibition of Dr. Olga Vojevogyina Tonhaizerné, titled Reflections - Music in Pictures. The exhibition will be opened on the 14th of April at 3.00 p.m. by Cultural Manager Viktor Csaba Kozák. Dr. Olga Vojevogyina Tonhaizerné and Zsuzsanna Kocsis Zsomborné will perform a musical program in the Liszt Hall. Participation is free of charge. The concert of the brass bands of Kodály Zoltán Music Secondary School and Music School - AMI is entitled "Voices of Youth" and can be heard in the Great Hall of the Kölcsey Centre on the 14th of April from 5.00 p.m. The programme of children's and youth ensembles, winners of several national and international competitions, invites the audience on a musical journey from march songs to film music and compositions written especially for wind orchestra. The soloist of the evening will be horn player of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and former student of the Zenede Dániel Ember. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust, the German Cultural Forum in Debrecen is launching a long-term awareness-raising programme, the Éva Fahidi Dialogue Programme. The programme's name is linked to Éva Fahidi, a Holocaust survivor from Debrecen and Honorary Citizen of the City of Debrecen. The programme will start on the evening of the 15th of April with a thematic film, titled The Euphoria of Existence (2019), screening followed by a discussion. The aim of the event and the programme is to convey the message and legacy of Éva Fahidi “Never hate again!” Director: Réka Szabó Participants of the discussion: Andor Andrási, Réka Szabó and Zsuzsanna Iványi The entrance is free of charge, but registration is required. Contributors: Dénes Ludmány – viola / László Laskai – clarinet / Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor: Dániel Somogyi-Tóth Ticket price: HUF 3500, HUF 2700 About the pieces of music: Rossini's Overture to Vilmos Tell, composed for his last grand opera in 1829, is a twelve-minute piece that depicts life in the Swiss Alps. The piece begins with a dawn sung by five solo cellos, followed by a storm, brass instruments, and a pastoral interlude. The overture ends with a gallop announcing the Swiss patriots' victory over Austrian oppressors. Max Bruch, a late romantic master, is less known in Hungary, except for his violin concerto in G minor. This piece, Op. 88, was written for his son, Max Felix Bruch, and friend Willy Hess. Medical students are in the spotlight for three days straight at the 51st Medical Cup between the 19th and 21st of April hosted by the University of Debrecen. The Cup has been organised by 4 medical universities of the country since 1972. The participating universities of the Cup are the University of Szeged, Semmelweis University, the University of Debrecen and the University of Pécs. At the sports event students compete in 5 different sports: basketball, volleyball, Football, Handball and Waterpolo. This year for the first time women athletes will compete in every sport. One of the main events of the Debrecen Spring Festival will be an evening entitled "Being a guest at the Kodály Choir". Former member of the world-famous Acapella group Cosmos Jānis Ozols graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm with a degree in choral conducting. As a member of Cosmos, he has worked with world-renowned musicians and bands such as Bobby McFerrin, The Real Group, Take 6, Manhattan Transfer, The Hilliard Ensemble, The New York Voices, Flying Pickets, M-Pact and Icelandic music icon Björk. He has achieved many notable achievements both in his home country and abroad, including the Special Prize for Best Conductor at the 13th International Choir Competition in Barcelona and the Best New Conductor at the 49th International Choir Competition. The Kodály Choir, under the direction of conductor Ozols, will take the audience on a musical journey to the Baltic States on the 19th of April at 7:00 p.m. in the University of Debrecen's Assembly Hall.
