Four‑lane road is set to connect Debrecen and Hajdúszoboszló, major announcement made
The Minister of Construction and Transport made an important announcement in Hajdúszoboszló regarding infrastructure development. On Thursday, December 11, the minister first highlighted the dynamic growth of employment in the county.
“A four‑lane road will be built between Debrecen and Szoboszló at a cost of HUF 60 billion. Similar to main road 33, main road 4 may also be expanded to four lanes,” János Lázár highlighted.
Emphasizing the domestic and international tourism significance of the town, he noted that further development requires improvements in transport infrastructure. He recalled that in May he signed the document enabling the purchase of 470 plots of land between Debrecen and Hajdúszoboszló—a prerequisite for constructing the 20‑kilometer four‑lane highway connecting the two cities.
As Lázár explained, HUF 5.8 billion has already been allocated, and notifications to the affected landowners are underway. Between 2026 and 2029—before the next municipal elections—Debrecen and Hajdúszoboszló will be linked with the new road at a cost of HUF 60 billion.
Last February, the issue of expanding main road 4 between Debrecen and Hajdúszoboszló to four lanes was brought before the Debrecen City Council. Following those decisions, the modification of local planning tools was completed, and the state chief architect also gave approval.
According to the plans, the starting point of the four‑lane expansion in Debrecen will be István Street, while the endpoint will be the junction of main 4 and road 34121—the eastern junction of the Hajdúszoboszló bypass. This section will be approximately 15 kilometers long.
The city council proposals included the municipal study plan for the development, which contains several detailed designs. One of them shows that the lobbying efforts of Hajdúszoboszló residents were successful: they requested a roundabout at the main road 4 exit to Szoboszló, and it was incorporated into the plan.
In January 2025, reports noted that nearly 20,000 vehicles travel daily on main road 4 between Hajdúszoboszló and Debrecen. Back in the summer of 2008, a decision was made to reinforce the pavement of this section to withstand an axle load of 11.5 tons, while also expanding the road to two lanes in each direction. At the time, the plans were prepared so that both investments would be carried out together.
In addition to the Debrecen–Hajdúszoboszló project, a similar development is planned between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza. In January, János Lázár also announced that the renovation plans for the Debrecen–Nyíregyháza railway line had been completed, and the public procurement process for construction is expected to be launched soon.
