From the Power of a Hug to Bees and the Chinese Phoenix

Superheroes, butterflies, bees, Chinese phoenixes, 12 decorated flower floats, dancers, and musicians from all over the world: this year, Debrecen will once again welcome visitors with a number of colorful attractions on August 20, the day celebrating the founding of the Hungarian state, and during Carnival Week.

Last year, visitors admired 12 colorful flower floats at the Flower Carnival, accompanied by more than 1,500 participants. The carnival week has long drawn hundreds of thousands to the city. This year, attendees can expect creative and exciting rolling compositions in the parade.

Zita Dobos, CEO of Főnix Event Organizer Nonprofit Ltd., explained during a discussion held on August 14, 2025, that the companies involved in the city’s life are willing to invest both financial and human resources to launch a flower float.

This marks the 59th edition of Debrecen’s most popular summer event. Like last year, BMW Group is preparing a groundbreaking float focused on sustainability. Social responsibility plays a key role in the company’s values, including collaboration, support, talent recognition, and education.

Réka Jenei, Communications Director of BMW Group Plant Debrecen, said that these values are important to both the BMW Group and the Debrecen plant. She added that it is a joy to see the enthusiasm of their colleagues for the Flower Carnival. Their float this year is characterized by a blend of tradition and innovation, and it will continue to live on after the carnival by providing a platform for emerging talents.

Debreceni Vagyonkezelő Zrt. celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The holding, comprising nine subsidiaries, is preparing a symbolic float for the occasion. The beehive represents Debrecen and its residents, while the surrounding bees symbolize the employees of the member companies.

Kata Kovács, HR Director of Debreceni Vagyonkezelő Zrt., emphasized that when they say they are here for the city, it truly means that all 1,700 employees work for the city every single day. She personally sees the float as a celebration of these workers.

The Debrecen Vocational Training Center has been a continuous participant in the Flower Carnival for nine years. This year, they’re incorporating artificial intelligence into the design of their float. Zsolt Tirpák, Chancellor of the Debrecen Vocational Training Center, highlighted that collaboration and unity work exceptionally well in Debrecen. All participants are able to move forward together toward common goals and future achievements. He believes the existence and ongoing development of the Flower Carnival is a result of this unity.

A new feature this year is the community flower float, titled “The Power of a Hug.” Residents of Debrecen can adopt 240 flowers, care for them, and ultimately have them become part of the float. Decorating begins Friday, August 15, at Dósa nádor Square.

In 2025, the Debrecen Flower Carnival returns to its roots, placing the power of community collaboration at the heart of the celebration.

Deputy Mayor Diána Széles stated that the Flower Carnival is a bucket-list destination for Hungarians. People either want to come or have already been, so the event must constantly renew and offer something new.

CATL’s float will feature the Chinese phoenix, a symbol of peace and prosperity.

Carnival week kicks off Friday, August 15, with programs across the city. Highlights include the Botanika Expo at the Kölcsey Center, dance performances at the Fórum shopping mall, and chamber concerts at Dósa nádor Square.
