Debrecen Zoo has seen new animal births every week since the beginning of the year. This time, good news came about grey cattle, as not one, but two healthy calves were born.

The first was born on the 19th of January, after a gestation period of around nine and a half months, and shortly afterwards the caretakers were able to witness the arrival of another baby bull calf.

The two lively calves are exploring their surroundings with increasing curiosity, although for now they spend a lot of time resting under their mother’s protection.

Interestingly, although their name would suggest they are grey, grey calves are born with reddish fur and change to their familiar colour at a few months of age.

The main goal of Debrecen Zoo is the conservation of indigenous species and breeds, especially the Hungarian Grey Cattle which is one of the most distinctive features of the Great Plain with its unique appearance and centuries-old history. The institution hopes that visitors will be able to admire the new arrivals in their red state after the reopening.
