How the Super Canteen System Operates in Debrecen
The super canteen program has reached Debrecen, allowing students to decide not only what they eat, but also how much. At Huszár Gál Secondary School, the new system has made mealtimes more appealing and has also become an important educational tool. Montázs has now filmed at the institution to take a closer look at how the super cafeteria works in everyday life.
The super cafeteria was introduced three months ago at the Huszár Gál Secondary School, Primary School, Basic Art School, and Kindergarten, with positive experiences so far. According to principal Tibor Bujdosó, one of the most important changes is that children can choose for themselves and take only as much as they are sure they will eat. “Freedom and the possibility of making decisions are very important. At the same time, we also teach children not to waste food and to pay attention to how much they take for themselves,” he said.
The educational value of the system is also confirmed by primary teachers. Rebeka Majoros said that children quickly understood the essence of the super cafeteria. Often, they first take a small sample and, if they like the food, return later for a larger portion.
According to the students, not only freedom of choice matters, but also presentation and the environment. Several noted that the food seems tastier, and the renovation of the dining hall has made the atmosphere of meals more welcoming. Fruit and salad regularly appear on the menu, and occasionally even a dessert.
Another important benefit of the super cafeteria is that even picky eaters do not go hungry. “They always find something they are happy to eat, so no one has to sit through lunchtime on an empty stomach,” Rebeka Majoros added.
According to the school’s management, experiences so far have been clearly positive: there is less food waste, decisions are more conscious, and the dining hall has also become a community space where children like to spend time.
