Major Road Resurfacing Underway on Munkácsy Mihály Street

Large-scale road resurfacing works are taking place on Munkácsy Mihály Street, on the section between Arad Street and No. 13 Munkácsy Mihály Street. Details were presented at a press briefing on site on 18 March 2026 by Mayor László Papp, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, and city councillors József Hetei and Sándor Nagy.

According to Mayor László Papp, the road construction and transportation improvement projects launched this year have been planned for many years based on an assessment of the city’s residents’ needs, and are being carried out in those locations where local residents are most eager to see the roads renovated. The proposals originate from the citizens of Debrecen: local council members collect them, the city administration evaluates them, and during the preparation of the annual budget, it strives to incorporate as many of these suggestions as possible while respecting financial constraints. The mayor emphasised that Debrecen’s economic development strategy was designed with this objective in mind, and that the city’s improving economic position increasingly enables the local government to implement developments that respond to residents’ needs on a growing scale. According to László Papp, local tax revenues are set to reach a record high this year—all signs point to this so far—which will enable the municipality to carry out developments that serve the interests of the city’s residents. This year, for example, the city is spending a total of HUF 9.2 billion on the development of its transportation system, road network, and city management center, as well as on other transportation-related investments. These include the development project on Munkácsy Street, the current phase of which is scheduled to be completed this week. Starting the week of March 23, work will begin on Víztorony Street to replace the aging asphalt pavement. According to plans, the work in these areas will take a total of 6 weeks. Road construction, road renovation, and sidewalk construction work is currently underway in other parts of the city as well, and these projects will characterize this year’s spring and summer. The mayor has asked for the understanding and patience of residents living near the construction sites, in the hope that these road sections will be safer and more comfortable to travel on in the future.

As Deputy Mayor Diána Széles recalled, information was already provided earlier this week about road resurfacing works on Szív Street. This demonstrates that the municipality is able to offer solutions to transport-related problems raised by residents. In the case of the busy Munkácsy Street, renovation and improved traffic conditions are particularly important as it serves as an access route to the densely populated Fényes udvar area and also provides access to Bocskai School. Víztorony Street is likewise a collector road for the same residential area. As part of the current renovations, the municipality is allocating more than HUF 140 million from the city budget to Munkácsy and Víztorony Streets combined. Diána Széles also stressed that these investments are financed from growing local tax revenues—primarily from business taxes paid by companies that have settled in the city as a result of the municipality’s economic development programme. In this way, the citizens of Debrecen can see that industrial development has tangible benefits, and that becoming an industrial hub brings real advantages, as the resulting revenues enable the city to carry out investments—such as road resurfacing—that benefit everyone. The Deputy Mayor expressed hope that many residents will feel the positive effects of the significant funds allocated in this year’s city budget for transport-related developments. She thanked municipal councillors Sándor Nagy and József Hetei for consistently conveying residents’ concerns to the city leadership so that solutions can be found. Residents of Debrecen can continue to rely on this in the future.

City councillor József Hetei thanked the city leadership for always seeking ways to address the problems faced by residents. As he highlighted, the road sections now being renewed are important not only for the Fényes udvar area but also for transport in surrounding districts, such as Sóház.

City councillor Sándor Nagy spoke about the significant developments recently completed in central districts, including the renovation of the Csokonai National Theatre building, the reconstruction of Dósa nádor Square, the new flower market, and the development of the Fényes udvar local market and park. In the near future, further developments will be possible that respond directly to the everyday needs of residents in the area, such as tree planting, pavement repairs, and large-scale resurfacing on several streets.

On Munkácsy Mihály Street – between Arad Street and No. 13 Munkácsy Mihály Street – as well as on Víztorony Street, a total section of approximately 550 metres will be renewed at a cost of more than HUF 140 million.
