Mercure Debrecen hotel awarded BREEAM Excellent international certification

The four-star hotel strongly emphasizes sustainability, including environmentally conscious materials use, energy savings, and waste management.

Bee colonies live on the roof of the downtown hotel. In six months, they have produced around 60 kilos of honey for guests. Sustainability plays a vital role in the operation of the Mercure Debrecen hotel, for example, by sourcing raw materials from local producers, taking extraordinary measures to reduce food waste and choosing sustainable materials instead of single-use plastics. Energy saving is also considered: each room is temperature controlled separately, and water-saving taps are installed in all rooms and communal areas.

Sándor Szabó, deputy general manager of Szinorg Universal Zrt., said that a building of this size has 155 rooms, a large number of customers, changing laundry needs daily, and high water demand. Reducing such consumption while providing high quality to customers is very important for their future.

The hotel has been awarded the BREEAM Excellent international sustainability rating. This comprehensive system measures how energy-efficiently the building is run, how sustainably it is built, and how good it is to live and work in while leaving as little ecological footprint as possible.

Mayor László Papp said that sustainability is also essential for the city if this development is accompanied by sustainability, environmental protection, and environmental awareness.

The four-star Mercure Debrecen is the first hotel in Hungary to be awarded the BREEAM Excellent international sustainability certification.
