To be eligible for the award, an institution must have achieved a balanced development in all areas of museum activity from the complex development of its building(s), taking into account environmental aspects, to the processing and publication of its collections, its scientific work and exhibitions, its public relations, its knowledge transfer activities, its strengthening of its links with the community, its successes in strategic development and its excellence in one or more areas.
In the category of “small museums”, the Museum of the Year 2025 was awarded to the MODEM Modern and Contemporary Art Centre in Debrecen for its outstanding performance in the development of community relations and the successful integration of contemporary art into the public discourse, strengthening the local community.
“The two main profiles of the internationally connected cultural institution are the presentation of the most significant national and international achievements in the visual arts of the 20th century and the representative display of the most significant national and international representatives of current trends and progressive aspirations in contemporary visual arts and visual culture. As the institution with the largest contiguous exhibition space in Central and Eastern Europe, it aims to become an unavoidable player on the cultural scene, not only as an exhibition space, but also as a broader intellectual forum to which not only the audience, but also the artists are welcome to return regularly,” reads at magyarmuzeumok.hu.
