Next step taken toward rebuilding the railway between Debrecen and Oradea
The participation phase of the Ministry of Construction and Transport’s public procurement procedure for the design of a new 50-kilometer railway section between Debrecen and Berettyóújfalu was successful. Five companies applied for the call: Ring Mérnöki Iroda Kft., FŐMTERV Mérnöki Tervező Kft., Kontúr Csoport Tervező, Építtető, Kivitelező Kereskedelmi Kft., UTIBER Közúti Beruházó Kft., and TRENECON Tanácsadó és Tervező Kft. The Ministry of Construction and Transport invited all five applicants to submit a bid.
A train ran between Debrecen and Oradea for 13 years in the first half of the 20th century, ensuring economic relations between the two regions. The rails have now been lifted in several places, and travel is currently limited to the destination of Nagykereki from Debrecen.
In addition to the road connection between the two cities, a bicycle path was built along the entire section by 2023, but there has also been an old plan to rebuild the railway line. A feasibility study was completed a few years ago, based on which it was decided that the railway line would have the route Debrecen–Berettyóújfalu–Biharkeresztes–border–Oradea.
The Ministry of Construction and Transport first announced a competition for the design of the first 50-kilometer section between Debrecen and Berettyóújfalu. This railway line will replace railway line 106 between Nagykereki and Debrecen, which will receive a new route due to the development of Debrecen Airport. Until this is completed, buses will transport passengers instead of trains.
According to the tender documentation, the planned line will run parallel to the existing railway line 106 from the Debrecen railway station to the northwestern corner of the Debrecen airport area and then on a completely new route—taking into account the plan for extending the airport runway—to Berettyóújfalu station.
In addition, a new railway terminal will have to be planned near the Debrecen Southern Economic Zone.
The winning company will be responsible for preparing the licensing, construction, and tender plans, as well as preparing the technical specifications, budget, and item content suitable for the implementation, as well as several parts of the public procurement documentation, and conducting the licensing procedures for all necessary sections.
Other interesting facts from the tender documentation
The railway line will cross Highway M35 and Main Road 42 at a separate level (the railway will certainly run under the roads).
The section from Debrecen station to the airport is planned for a top speed of 80, the next few kilometers for 120, and the further section of the track to Berettyóújfalu for 160 kilometers/hour.
The winning company must examine the possibility of connecting the existing railway line 106 and the planned railway line 104 in the Derecske area with a level track connection.
and must also examine and develop the renovation of the remaining route of railway line 106 to the level of the detailed design.
In addition, the road accessibility of the industrial areas in the vicinity of Derecske railway station must be examined to meet current and future needs, as well as its development.
Furthermore, the possibilities for renovation of the infrastructure of the affected stations and stops must be examined, including the renovation of station buildings, the possibility of constructing high platforms, the construction of parking spaces (P+R, B+R), and the possibility of barrier-free transfer to buses.
