Pollen Season Arrives — Experts Highlight Testing as the Top Priority
Spring has finally begun; the sun has come out and the trees are in bloom, which, however, brings unpleasant symptoms for many people.
For those with allergies, even organising everyday life is not simple this time of year. Although everyone has their own tried-and-tested home remedies, the start of the pollen season is already being felt in pharmacies, with more and more people are seeking over-the-counter products to relieve allergic symptoms.
“We have already experienced a slight increase in demand; in fact, more and more people are coming to us with the classic symptoms of hay fever, such as a runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes. Perhaps itchy eyes are the symptom we are noticing increasingly compared to before,” highlighted pharmacist Zsuzsanna Supp Frikkerné.
Dr Ferenc Gönczi, an allergologist, spoke on Médiacentrum Debrecen’s Esti Közelkép about the importance of an accurate diagnosis, for which testing is essential and, contrary to misconceptions, safe. “For 95 to 98 percent of patients, the skin test is not painful at all and is a very safe method,” he emphasised.
The specialist added that hay fever affects the upper respiratory tract; however, in around 40 per cent of cases, asthma may also develop, which poses a more serious risk. He stressed that although artificial intelligence is providing answers to an increasing number of questions, a specialist medical examination remains essential for a reliable diagnosis and proper treatment.
