School health screening would be extended to the whole county
School health screenings are popular, with around 100-110 students screened daily at the Pósa Street Institute of Primary Care and Health Promotion.
The programme will continue this school year, with lectures and classes running alongside existing screenings and measurements, building on last year’s results. The initiative is so popular that it is expected to be extended to the county level within a year.
On Monday morning, twelfth-grade students from three secondary schools took turns at the screening tests at the Youth Health Centre in Pósa Street. They had a school doctor’s and a nurse’s check-up, a complex hearing and dental check-up, and an ECG.
The young people are also offered various physical and mental health classes and preventive lectures on health conditions and current trends. For example, last year’s survey showed that nearly 16 percent of the students measured were overweight.
“Seeing last year’s results on rising obesity, we want to focus even more on lifestyle change,” DAEFI Director Csaba Papp said.
More than 13,000 students were screened in Debrecen last year. “Besides screening, there is a psychological and physical education and information programme. Over the last five years, the screening results in Debrecen have been outstanding, well above the national average,” Deputy Mayor Diána Széles said.
The five-year programme is unique not only in the region but also in the country. Thanks to the cooperation with UNICEF, we can launch a large-scale development in the adjacent building, which will create an opportunity to extend DAEFI’s screening programmes to the whole county,” Mayor László Papp said.
The school health screening programmes in the surrounding municipalities are expected to start this school year or next school year at the latest.
