The 50th Debrecen Grand Prix – The success story continues, tradition lives on
The Debrecen Grand Prix in speedway racing has reached a major milestone: this year marks the 50th edition of Hungary’s most prestigious invitational speedway event.
The race will take place on Wednesday, August 20, at 4 PM at the Perényi Pál Speedway Stadium.
To celebrate the jubilee, the event will feature the strongest international lineup ever, including world champion riders and two Hungarian competitors—among them 16-year-old local talent Zoltán Lovas, who will make his debut in front of thousands of fans.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasized at the press conference that Debrecen remains the last stronghold of speedway racing in Hungary. As long as the public remains enthusiastic, the city will continue to support the sport. He confirmed that the municipality has allocated 15 million HUF in funding for the organizing club this year, and added an extra 2 million HUF to ensure a high-quality event fitting for the occasion.
Norbert Baráth, CEO of Speedwolf Sports Organizer Nonprofit Ltd., expressed pride in hosting the 50th Debrecen Grand Prix. All participants are top-tier international riders, including Jason Doyle, a current Grand Prix competitor and individual world champion. He’ll face tough competition from past Debrecen winners like Matic Ivacic, two-time champion Niels-Kristian Iversen, and Hungarian speedway legend Norbert Magosi.
For the first time, the local crowd will see Zoltán Lovas, Hungary’s most promising young rider, compete in the Grand Prix. He stated his determination to perform at his best and earn points and victories.
According to the rules of the Debrecen Grand Prix, after the 20 preliminary races, the winner will advance directly to the final, while those ranked second to ninth will compete in the semifinals, from which the top two will join the final field. Thus, the top five racers will ultimately compete in the race of races to determine who will be the 2025 Debrecen champion.
The gates open at 1 PM, and the race begins at 4 PM. Fans can enjoy a dedicated fan zone with side events including autograph sessions, raffles, a speedway exhibition, selfie stations, pit visits, and sponsor giveaways.
