The best of Scandinavian films are coming to Debrecen
Four pre-premiere works, as well as the most prestigious Northern European films, will be screened at the 12th annual Scandinavian Film Festival.
The distributor, Vertigo Média, wrote in its statement that the festival’s films will also be screened at rural locations, with varying programs and ticket prices. The best of Scandinavian film production will be available to watch at the Apollo Cinema in Pécs, the Belvárosi Cinema in Szeged, the House of Arts in Miskolc, the TISZApART Cinema in Szolnok, the Agora Savaria Film Theater in Szombathely, the FOTON Audiovisual Center in Veszprém, and the Apollo Cinema in Debrecen.
In the “cívis” city, film specials await cinemas between September 25 and 28. The program includes four Scandinavian films shown before their premiere: Drømmer (Dreams), The Eagle Birds of the Republic, Den sidste viking (The Last Viking), and Den svenska torpeden (The Swedish Torpedo).
The Norwegian relationship film Dreams had its world premiere in the competition program of the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won three awards: the Golden Bear, the FIPRESCI Critics’ Prize, and the Guild Film Prize. Dreams will be shown in cinemas from October 2, and the two other films in the “Sex/Love/Dreams” trilogy, Sex and Love, will also be shown in connection with its pre-premiere screenings.
The Swedish film The Eagles of the Republic had its world premiere in the competition program of the Cannes International Film Festival. The final film of Tarik Saleh’s Cairo trilogy is Sweden’s Oscar nominee in the international film category. It will be released in cinemas nationwide in early 2026. In addition to The Eagles of the Republic, another film from the Cairo trilogy, The Boy from Heaven, will also be shown in the program.
The Last Viking is the latest black comedy by Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen, starring Mads Mikkelsen. The Last Viking had its world premiere in the official program of the world’s oldest film festival, the Venice International Film Festival. The main character of the story imagines himself to be John Lennon. The Last Viking will be shown in cinemas from November 6, and in connection with its pre-premiere screenings, the director’s previous films Champions of Justice and Men and Chickens will also be shown at the Anders Thomas Jensen marathon.
The Swedish Torpedo, which is based on real events, is about the exceptional feat of Sally Bauer. Before the outbreak of World War II, the woman steadfastly prepared to swim across the English Channel and reach England from France by open water without help. The Swedish Torpedo will be shown in cinemas from October 16.
