Young people were able to experience what it is like when a Hungarian and a German city are in alliance with each other.
Mayor László Papp wrote on his social media page that he was saying goodbye to the mayor of his German twin town, Paderborn, Michael Dreier, who will finish his mayoral term in the autumn, and the
He said that he was the one who, continuing the legacy of his predecessors, nurtured the twin city relationship between Debrecen and Paderborn with faith and enthusiasm, and he emphasised how important it is that through exchange student programmes, young people can also feel what it is like when a Hungarian and a German city are in alliance with each other.
“I trust that the friendship of our citizens will continue to bring many common, defining experiences and exceptional moments in the future, and that the more than three decades of cooperation will continue towards an even deeper, more meaningful twinning connection.”
“I wish you good health and more meaningful, happy years, Michael!” László Papp concluded his post.
As previously reported Paderborn and Debrecen have maintained active relations in the fields of education, culture, and tourism since 1994. The 30th anniversary of the twinning relationship between the two settlements was celebrated in 2024 at the Kölcsey Centre.
“The German presence in Debrecen is absolutely strong in economic terms, and I consider it very important that human, diplomatic, and cultural relations are also built in addition to economic relations,” László Papp stated at the time.
The city leaders also signed a declaration of intent at the ceremony stating that they would like to continue the cooperation in the future.
