The participants of Debrecen’s “Sleep Another Time!” challenge competed for a place in the final
Creative tasks, skill quizzes, and logic puzzles. This year’s qualifiers for the “Sleep Another Time!” 24-hour competition also held countless challenges for secondary school students. One of the most popular games for Debrecen students was organized for the fourth time this year, where teams from 16 secondary schools now competed to reach the finals on October 17, 2025.
“Report on the natural assets of Debrecen”: Secondary school teams had to cope with such a creative task in the qualifiers for the “Sleep Another Time!” 24-hour competition This year, 16 schools entered the finals, and among the team members there were some who were participating in the competition for the first time. The students were tested at several locations, for example, in the Sziget-kék Thematic Playground. The Nagyerdei Cultural Park also participated in the organization, as this year’s central theme is the natural assets of Debrecen.
“The Nagyerdei Cultural Park is joining this great competition at three locations. One is Sziget-kék, where the competitors have to solve a forest puzzle. But there is a bit of a trick to it, because it is not one but two puzzles at once, and they are even double-sided,” revealed managing director Zoltán Váradi.
There were also a number of speed and skill tasks in the Oláh Gábor Street sports complex. The schools formed 20-member teams in such a way that everyone could show their own strengths but still be able to function as a team during the skill, logic, and creative tasks.
“They are actually performing the first test of strength in their lives, or participating in such a test of strength, which is truly mentally and physically demanding. And there is only one thing that can help them overcome the problem: the cohesive community that we call a team,” emphasized János D. Halász, executive director of DEMKI.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles told the young people that “the Sleep Again!” 24-hour competition has no other purpose than to make them happy and feel good in the city. “Here they can fight for the team, for the community. We give them a day off. They practically don’t feel like they are at school, in the daily anxiety, but they are freed and get to know each other. And what is more important, schools also get to know each other. This way, the community of secondary school students in Debrecen can become a real community,” summed up the deputy mayor.
More than 350 people, including accompanying teachers, took part in Friday’s test. 12 schools will advance to the final, where they will compete for the victory for 24 hours on April 1, 2026.
