The renovation of the Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God began in the fall of 2023, and they began covering the roof, which is covered with pre-patinated red copper plates. The roof of the church was once similar, so now it is being restored to its original condition.

The construction of the independent Greek Catholic church in Debrecen began in 1907. The work lasted for nearly three years. Bishop Gyula Firczák consecrated the neo-Byzantine-style church in honour of the protection of the Mother of God on May 22, 1910.

The Greek Catholic Church continuously tried to ensure the good technical condition of the building and to carry out the necessary conservation work, but at the same time, more than a hundred years had passed since its construction, so a complete renovation of the main cathedral became necessary.

During this, the building will be enriched with among other things a new heating system and copper sheet cladding. The interior painting work of the church is already progressing well, and the new altar of the cathedral is being prepared.

The full renovation is scheduled to be completed this fall.

A significant part of the HUF 2.5 billion cost of the comprehensive renovation, HUF 2 billion, will be provided by the state, and the difference will be covered by donations from the faithful and the diocese’s own resources.

Anyone can still support the renovation work by purchasing a brick ticket, and well-intentioned donors will also receive a special memento of this.

During the renovation, the experts saved original bricks from the early 1900s, which were provided with special, unique packaging. They are used to thank the donors for their financial support.

There are several ways to purchase a brick ticket:

  • in person: at the Archbishop’s Office (Debrecen, Petőfi tér 8.)
  • in person: at the Debrecen community house (Attila tér 5.
  • by bank transfer: Hajdúdorog Metropolitan Church, account number 10702071-19204886-53200008.

An interview was recently conducted with icon painter Tamás Seres about the interior painting work taking place in the Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God.
