The University of Debrecen is the second most popular in the country in terms of the proportion of admitted students
In this year’s supplementary admission procedure, 11,320 people were admitted to higher education, so 107,360 students can start their studies in September this year—MTI (Hungarian Telegraph Office) quoted the State Secretary responsible for Higher Education, Vocational and Adult Training, and Youth at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation.
Veronika Varga-Bajusz highlighted that for the third year in a row, the annual number of students has exceeded one hundred thousand, and every second student can study at a rural university. In this regard, she noted that rural universities have grown into genuine regional centers, eliminating the capital’s “pull effect.”
In this year’s admission procedure, 77,797 will begin their studies as state scholarship holders, and 29,563 will study on self-funded training.
She indicated that the number of state scholarship training places has increased by 15,000 since the renewal of higher education in 2022, and there are more than two thousand more scholarship students compared to last year, adding that the government is spending HUF 155 billion on supporting students in scholarship training.
According to the State Secretary, the most popular training areas are technical and information technology, followed by economics, and teacher training is in third place. She mentioned that six out of ten students were admitted to the so-called MTMI+ training, which is considered a priority training area from a national economic perspective.
She said that the strengthening of these trainings is visible, which shows that young people believe that these trainings can increase their position in the labor market.
Veronika Varga-Bajusz also reported that 76,245 students were admitted to undergraduate studies, 9,794 to undivided studies, 2,236 to higher education vocational training, and 19,085 to master’s studies.
Regarding teacher training, she said that 16,771 students were admitted. As she put it, at the end of this school year, they were looking for 2,500 teachers, but that number has now “significantly decreased”, adding that last year, 3,600 people graduated as teachers. The situation of teachers is becoming more and more stable; it is becoming more and more balanced so that they can provide an adequate number of teachers.
She also reported that, in terms of university rankings, half of the top ten institutions are located in the capital and half in rural areas.
The first three institutions in terms of the proportion of admitted students are Eötvös Loránd University, followed by the University of Debrecen and the University of Szeged.
Interestingly, ten students are over 70 years old. Renáta Vanó, Deputy President of the Education Office responsible for higher education, said that applicants for supplementary admission had already received text message notifications of the results on Wednesday.
Applicants will find the classification decision on their own interface on this page in the e-admission system, and after a few days, the institution will send information about the admission and enrollment procedures.
