This is when schools in Debrecen may close due to extreme cold
In a statement issued on Monday because of the extreme weather, the Ministry of Interior informed the public about the cases in which in-person education would be suspended in educational institutions. As they write, if the temperature in classrooms does not reach 20 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days, the school principal will order an extraordinary teaching break.
In response to an inquiry by Dehir, the Debrecen District Education Center reported that, thanks to continuous consultation with the management body, their institutions are prepared to handle situations caused by extreme weather, therefore at present there are no circumstances that would justify ordering an extraordinary break.
They added that, under the law, in the event of extreme weather, an epidemic, a natural disaster, or another unavoidable cause—if the operation of the institution cannot be ensured—the head of the institution, in the case of a settlement-level emergency the notary, and at county or capital level the competent authority, is entitled to order an extraordinary break.
If the duration of the extraordinary break is expected to exceed three teaching days, the minister responsible for public education is immediately notified, who may, if necessary, order an out-of-class, digital mode of instruction.
The suspension of in-person education nationwide was last announced by the government on March 13, 2020. As a result of the measure, from March 16, 2020 all primary and secondary schools were closed, and they switched to out-of-class, digital education in Debrecen as well.
According to a Wednesday article by Index, one school has already been closed due to the extreme cold: the heating system of the primary school in Bogyiszló, Tolna County, broke down, so teaching had to be interrupted and the students were sent home. They write that, according to information published in the institution’s Facebook group, troubleshooting has already begun, but because of the outage they were unable to continue education that day.
