Trains will be able to travel at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza

A company is being sought to renovate the railway line between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza, with an investment exceeding HUF 300 billion—a major step toward modernizing regional transport infrastructure.

The Ministry of Construction and Transport has announced a competition for the renovation of the section of railway line 100 between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza. According to the tender documentation published in the Official Journal of the European Union, the 47-kilometer section must be suitable for 160 kilometers/hour traffic after the reconstruction, except for the curves following the Debrecen station, where the target is 120 kilometers/hour.

As stated, the stations must be redesigned to meet evolving freight transport needs, ensure high-quality passenger service, and comply with EU interoperability standards. The estimated value of the development is HUF 254 billion.

Another call for tenders was published in the Official Journal of the European Union for the construction of the safety equipment, the telecommunications system, and the European Train Control System (ETCS2) on the same railway section, without which trains would not be able to travel at that speed, even if the track were suitable for 160 km/h. The estimated value of this development is HUF 77 billion.

Companies can apply for both tenders until December 1, and the winners will have two years to complete the work.

The general assemblies of Debrecen and Nyíregyháza adopted a cooperation agreement at the end of 2017, one of the points of which was that the parties would initiate the renovation of the railway line between Debrecen and Nyíregyháza, and they also included in the agreement that they would try to achieve the widening of the main road 4 between the two cities to two lanes twice.

The designer for the four-lane expansion of main road 4 is currently being sought

In the meantime, preparations have already begun, and the public procurement for the design is underway. The participation phase was successful, with five companies applying for the call, and the Ministry of Construction and Transport invited all five applicants to submit a bid. The results have not yet been announced.

“Residents along this road section should prepare for its expansion to four lanes. Two-thirds of the route will follow a newly designated path, while one-third will remain on the existing alignment,” Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár previously announced.

The task was defined in the tender documentation as follows: preparation of the licensing and construction design documentation necessary for the creation of a continuous 2×2 lane road connection of approximately 35 kilometers in length, of which 10 kilometers will be on an existing route and 25 kilometers on a new route.

The section affected by the development extends from the junction of main road 354—the future Debrecen eastern bypass section—to the junction of main road 4 and the M3 highway, as planned with six multi-level junctions and associated sub-junctions, as well as three two-lane roundabouts and 19 structures in accordance with the parameters of a 2×2 lane rural primary road, with the replacement and protection of all affected public utilities and the acquisition of the necessary permits.
