United efforts to address the social and public safety challenges of homelessness in Debrecen

The Municipality of Debrecen is seeking responsible, collaborative solutions to the issue of homelessness—especially as the cold months approach, when life on the streets becomes most perilous.

At the initiative of Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, another roundtable discussion was held, bringing together representatives from the municipality, the police, public space supervision, ReFoMix Nonprofit Közhasznú Kft., and the city’s social and healthcare service providers.

The meeting focused on the safe placement of homeless individuals, maintaining public order, and responding to residents’ concerns. In recent weeks, several neighborhoods in Debrecen have reported disturbances in public spaces, illegal encampments, and hygiene-related issues. The city leadership aims to respond to these situations with both social sensitivity and firm action.

Feedback from district representatives and residents is being addressed jointly by the municipality, organizations helping homeless people, the police, and public space supervisors. The deputy mayor emphasized that even assistance must follow safe protocols. No one should be left alone, but at the same time, the safety of those living in apartment buildings, families, and the elderly is also of paramount importance.

Experts agreed that the most effective support is provided through official channels. Residents are asked not to intervene individually if they see someone in need, but instead to contact ReFoMix staff at +36 30 206 1377, available 24/7 from November 1 to April 30.

Additionally, professionals urge everyone not to allow homeless individuals into apartment buildings or share entry codes. If someone encounters a stranger in their building, they should call the emergency number 112. It’s also advisable to notify the building’s property manager if such incidents occur regularly.

The meeting also highlighted that rather than offering direct aid to homeless individuals, it is more effective to support ReFoMix Nonprofit Közhasznú Kft. through financial or other donations. (Bank account number: 11738008–21504578)

Real opportunities for those living on the streets can only come through professional care—access to warming shelters, medical attention, psychological and social support. This not only improves the lives of those affected but also helps maintain order in public spaces and ensures the safety of residents.
