University of Debrecen Plans Three New Dormitories with 1,600 Beds
As part of its medium-term plans, the university aims to construct three modern student residences with a total capacity of around 1,600 places. In addition, apartment buildings will be developed for early-career lecturers, as well as a retirement home for former university professors.
The first development, a 320-bed student residence, will be built on the Böszörményi Road Campus. The public procurement process for this project is expected to be launched this summer, said Chancellor Zoltán Bács. He added that, alongside one and two-bed student apartments, a new Learning Centre will also be established as part of the 11,000-square-metre investment.
Commenting on the university housing developments that align closely with the city’s broader growth, Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasised that Debrecen offers a complete life pathway, from education through employment to starting a family.
Within the municipality’s Főnix Housing Programme, around 200 homes may be built in cooperation with property developers and employers. These will be available to employees under the age of 35 working in Debrecen at one-third of the market rental price.
