What does summer bring to Debrecen?

The Debrecen Gourmet Festival is followed by the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days, and then the biggest summer sensation, the Debrecen Flower Carnival. World-class food, wine, or music? Or maybe a community flower float that you decorate yourself? It’s all waiting for you in the city this summer!

Debrecziner Gourmet Festival in the Great Forest  is held again this weekend. The three-day gastronomic event is also one of the city’s most important summer community spaces with local values, national chef legends and family experiences. Last year, almost six thousand people visited the festival, which this year awaits guests with an even more diverse programme and film themes. And summer is just beginning. Zita Dobos, the managing director of Főnix Event Organizer Ltd., spoke about these as a guest of Debrecen Television’s Evening Close-up programme.

As she said, special attention will be paid to lactose and gluten intolerant people at this year’s Debrecziner Gourmet Festival, and restaurants such as Freedom will serve these needs. She also touched on the film theme: restaurants coming to the event were asked to bring a dish they had seen in a movie and would be happy to prepare.

“The chefs were very creative all over the country. It will be worth visiting and tasting what delicacies certain fancy names cover,”  Zita Dobos highlighted.

She believes that such high-quality dishes can be tasted by anyone, but of course they also paid attention to having budget-friendly dishes. This year, visitors can also learn from the newly launched show kitchen (container kitchen), where excellent chefs will cook for 3 days.

“You can ask questions and learn certain cooking processes,” she added.

The 2025 Gourmet Festival will also focus more on children, with many restaurants offering delicacies that they will enjoy. For example, there will be pizza and spaghetti especially for the youngest guests, but the organisers are also preparing many other new features this year. For example, a separate Kids Corner, where they will be welcomed with crafts and programmes.

Every evening, concerts will conclude  eating and drinking, making the event practically a full-day family programme. You can read our detailed program recommendation article by clicking here.

Zita Dobos also talked about the big events that will follow the festival. Staying on the gastronomic side, the Debrecen Wine and Jazz Days will arrive between 31 July  and 2 August  with more music, in this regard, she said, they have reached a new level, since wines from 22 wine regions will be available, 45 wineries will visit and more than 40 concerts will be heard during the 3 days.

Then comes the biggest, most famous festival, the Debrecen Flower Carnival, with a whole week of programmes.

“We strived to create a community experience that would give something new to both visitors and residents.”

My personal favourite part of the event will be the community flower float, which we will be able to decorate together for a week. Anyone can join in,” she explained.

Another nice element, she said, is that this year they went back in history to 1905, when the local women’s association collected money for an ambulance, so they decorated a wagon. They paraded it through the city for this good cause.

“This year, we asked the large companies that launched the flower floats to support a good cause that is also related to their company philosophy. In this way, an all-art composition will be built through the flower floats, the dance groups, and the causes themselves, which each company will represent,” she emphasised.

Finally,s he said that it is not easy to tackle and modernise the flower carnival, but they have been working for a long time to ensure that everyone will have a real “Wow!” experience this year, and they will get  in the mood for next year’s carnival.
