World‑Class Vehicle Production Driven by Specialists in Debrecen
As previously reported, the BMW iX3 won the 2026 World Car of the Year award, which was announced at the New York International Auto Show. The international jury of 98 automotive journalists (voting from 33 countries) awarded not just one, but two prizes to the BMW iX3 model. As the first Neue Klasse model, it not only won the 2026 “World Car of the Year” title—outperforming competitors across all powertrain categories—but also received the 2026 “World Electric Vehicle of the Year” award.
In connection with the awards, Mayor László Papp also spoke about the achievement on Médiacentrum Debrecen’s HírPONT. “It is a great source of pride that Debrecen now has an economy which we can confidently describe as one of the most innovative, most capable of growth, and most environmentally conscious, as it has become a key centre of electromobility and the electric transition,” László Papp emphasised.
According to the Mayor, it is also a matter of pride that the city is home to professionals capable of producing a vehicle that is worthy of significant global recognition. He added that this represents a very strong partnership between the German and Hungarian economies.
Demand for the iX3 has exceeded expectations, leading to the introduction of a second shift at the Debrecen plant earlier than originally planned. The first model in the Neue Klasse range, the iX3, has been manufactured at the Debrecen facility since last autumn. More than 50,000 units were ordered within the first six months alone.
Moreover, BMW is establishing a new business centre in Debrecen, creating a further 50 jobs. According to a joint report by HR Portal and the company information provider Opten, the number of employees at the BMW plant in Debrecen has increased to 4,070, while recruitment is ongoing.
