3×3 Basketball: Vienna team wins $50,000 in Debrecen
On the final day of the six-day 3×3 events in Debrecen, only the World Tour Masters knockout stage remained. Although the meteorologists did not promise much for Sunday, the quarterfinals began in dry weather.
Unlike Saturday’s women’s competition, the first match was already a huge battle; Valencia and Lausanne did not let go of the other for a minute, so a close end game was decided. The Spaniards concentrated better in the last attacks, so they surprisingly knocked out their group-winning opponent (19-21). The battle between Marbella and the Skyliners was much more one-sided; the Spaniards, who came from the qualifiers, were unable to repeat their overwhelming performance on Friday. Despite winning four out of four matches, their experienced German opponent physically crushed them (14-19).
The teams played the next match in pouring rain, but the tent roof over the competition area proved to be excellent, and the schedule could continue without any obstacles. Serbian Liman, who won the Debrecen group, also bled out in the top eight, as the Viennese team gained a big advantage early on, which they held until the break. The 22-18 final score suggests a closer battle, but the Austrians, who let up a bit towards the end, were not in danger of winning. Amsterdam, who surprisingly only advanced in second place on Friday and were competing with the Olympic champions, clearly aimed to correct their previous stumble, which they did against Lithuanian Raudondvaris, who had already triumphed in Debrecen in 2023. Their 22-15 success also meant that no group winner could make it to the top four.
Frankfurt‘s professional team, Skyliners, led almost the entire first semi-final, but Valencia, who fought very well throughout the tournament, eventually saved the match for extra time in the final game. They even took the lead in overtime, but then Stefan Kojic, who had previously triumphed in Debrecen several times with the Liman team, came and scored a double with a man, sending his team into the final (20-21). The fight between Vienna and Amsterdam was worthy of a final, as European champions met Olympic champions. However, the expected big fight did not happen; the Austrians really pushed the middle of the match, and the advantage they had built here was maintained (21-16).
The final between Vienna and the Skyliners was an excellent end to the day, the World Tour, and also the nearly one-week 3×3 event series in Debrecen, as the audience saw the most exciting and high-quality match of the past few days.
At the beginning of the match, Frankfurt had a slight advantage, and in the second half, Vienna had a slight advantage, but as it should have been, the score was again close to a draw at the end. With Vienna leading 20-19, Kojics had two free throws, but since he only made one of them, the final basket in the remaining time was the deciding factor. Both sides had several attempts to win, which was eventually won by the Austrians through a long-range shot by Enis Murati.
