New InterCity carriages are arriving on the Debrecen railway line
On Tuesday the government decided to purchase new railway carriages, a move that also affects Hajdú‑Bihar county, Minister of Transport and Construction János Lázár announced in Hajdúszoboszló.
“On the one hand, new InterCity carriages are set to run between Budapest and Debrecen. In addition, by December 31 the contract is expected to be signed for the purchase of motor trains from Switzerland. These will run between Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, and Miskolc, so they will not operate on the Debrecen–Budapest route but rather gather passengers around Debrecen. The trains are 10–15‑year‑old Stadler‑built units, to be refurbished in Szolnok before entering service,” the minister explained.
As he said, 93 vehicles were purchased, and these will be gradually put into service, with a total seating capacity of 14,000, which is one-tenth of MÁV’s current total seating capacity. He also mentioned they plan to purchase seventy new motor trains from China, which can be manufactured within two to three years. Some of these could also be allocated to the Debrecen–Budapest railway line.
János Lázár also stated that a four‑lane road between Debrecen and Hajdúszoboszló will be built at a cost of HUF 60 billion, and that soon Hajdú‑Bihar county passes will be accepted on Debrecen’s public transport system, while Debrecen city passes will be valid on MÁV trains and Volán buses.
