A new, safer, and more comfortable Határ Road now serves local residents and commuters

The second phase of the large‑scale renovation of Határ Road has been completed, meaning that one of the city’s busiest collector roads has now been renewed along its entire length. As a result of the development, transport conditions for local residents have significantly improved, and the surrounding infrastructure has become much safer. At the press conference held on site, Deputy Mayors Lajos Barcsa and Diána Széles also emphasized that the investment simultaneously serves Debrecen’s economic growth and the everyday comfort of its residents.

In the phase just completed, the section between Varjútövis Street and the highway roundabout was renewed over a length of about 1,600 meters. During the construction, new asphalt pavement was laid, local repairs to the road structure were carried out, the sidewalks and drainage ditches were arranged, and six bus stops were modernized. The investment was carried out with gross government support of HUF 200 million. The first phase of the Határ Road renovation was completed in the spring of 2025.

Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasized that the complete resurfacing of Határ Road was finished today, covering a total of 1.6 kilometers in the second phase. He highlighted that the works went beyond simple asphalting, but drainage was improved, and six bus stops were also renovated so that residents can wait for public transport in more comfortable conditions. He also noted that since 2019 more than HUF 700 million has been spent on local residential roads in the area, including streets that previously had no asphalt at all. Lajos Barcsa underlined that Debrecen’s economy is continuously strengthening, which makes it possible to carry out further and further transport developments. Whether from tax revenues or government support, the city leadership always strives to improve the comfort of residents. “The renovation of Határ Road was also made possible with government funding, for which thanks are due,” he added.

Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, the district’s municipal representative, stated that this development is not only about roads but also about strengthening the local community. She emphasized that Határ Road is one of the district’s most important collector roads. After Kishegyesi Road and Pósa Street, this was the next section that everyone living here had longed to see renovated, and now it has been completed with the support of the Hungarian Government. Diána Széles added that the true strength of the district lies in its community. One of the most important achievements of recent years has been the establishment of the health center and community house on Pósa Street, which hundreds of people visit daily. These infrastructural developments also help ensure that no one feels lonely and that everyone can experience the strength of the community. She recalled the transformation the area has undergone over the past 20 years: from a rural, farm-like environment, it has become a well‑organized, developing, and strong urban district. This is proof of Debrecen’s progress, showing that no district is left without attention alongside major investments.

The large‑scale repair of Határ Road also includes painting the road markings, which must be carried out on a dry surface, so the contractor will complete this work in the coming days.
