Municipality of Debrecen and EDC Debrecen Once Again Recognized for Bicycle‑Friendly Developments

Ten municipalities and ten companies have been awarded the titles Bicycle‑Friendly Municipality and Bicycle‑Friendly Workplace, the Transport Science Institute announced.

The award ceremony for the competition, organized by the Ministry of Construction and Transport, took place on December 17, 2025, hosted by the Transport Science Institute.

The awards were presented by Kornél Kovács, Head of the Department of Motor Vehicle Transport and Railway Regulation at the Ministry of Construction and Transport, and Tamás Kovács, Director General and Head of the Coordination Office at the Transport Science Institute.

The ministry responsible for transport launched the Bicycle‑Friendly Municipality and Bicycle‑Friendly Workplace competition in 2006. In 2025, the competition was announced for the 17th time for municipal governments, small, medium‑sized, and multinational companies, as well as public institutions. The title recognizes municipal and employer initiatives that promote cycling and improve the conditions for cyclists. In addition to rewarding systematic developments, the program seeks to highlight positive examples and forward‑looking solutions, and to collect and share the experiences gained.

A total of 38 applications were submitted for the 2025 competition: 17 municipalities and 21 workplaces applied for the Bicycle‑Friendly award. As in previous years, the evaluators established a ranking system, awarding municipalities and employers in the categories of “beginner,” “advanced,” and “title winner.” Three municipalities and six workplaces received the Beginner Bicycle‑Friendly recognition, while three municipalities and four companies or institutions achieved the Advanced Bicycle‑Friendly level. Certificates for these categories will be sent to the recipients by post.

Invitations to the award ceremony were extended to those who reached the highest category and earned the Bicycle‑Friendly title.

Title winners are entitled to use the Bicycle‑Friendly designation, logo, and signage in their communications for one year.

At the ceremony, Kornél Kovács emphasized that promoting cycling awareness and increasing transport consciousness have been priority areas for the Ministry for many years. The Ministry continuously develops its programs and strives to make them accessible to as many people as possible.

The Government of Hungary supports the development of cycling infrastructure; currently, more than 11,000 kilometers of cycling‑recommended routes serve cyclists across the country. Since 2010, Hungary has invested approximately 250 billion forints of domestic and EU funding into the development of the cycling network.

In his welcome speech, Tamás Kovács highlighted that, in his experience, those who commute by bicycle demonstrate exemplary commitment and perseverance. He thanked the awarded municipalities and workplaces for supporting their residents and employees in choosing an environmentally friendly and healthy form of transport.
