In addition to roads and sidewalks, bus stops were also cleared of snow in Debrecen
Work is underway citywide to maintain traffic conditions amid winter road conditions: in addition to de-icing roads and sidewalks, the municipality is placing great emphasis on clearing snow from stops as well. So far, snowfall has not caused significant delays on DKV services. Extreme cold weather is expected by Friday, therefore MÁV will open heated warming areas at railway stations.
In addition to cleaning pedestrian routes, the city is now placing greater emphasis on clearing snow from nearly 700 DKV stops.
“During the follow-up inspections of the work ordered so far, we noticed that there is still room for improvement here, so we have redeployed the teams to these areas again, and with the appropriate staffing and attitude we are carrying out the de-icing of the public transport platforms maintained by the city,” emphasized Tibor Schwarcz, deputy head of the Urban Development Department.
DKV had already completed the winter preparation of its modern vehicles earlier, which are now able to provide appropriate temperatures for passengers. So far, snowfall has not caused significant delays and, in the case of trams and trolley buses, there are solutions in place to deal with freezing rain as well.
“With trams and trolley buses, overhead line freezing can occur when moisture or other precipitation adheres to the wires—at such times we operate so-called ice-breaking services to knock the accumulated ice off. This is why passengers sometimes see sparking overhead lines when our vehicles are in operation,” stressed István Miklós, traffic director at DKV.
A dedicated government task force is continuously coordinating measures related to the extreme weather. In homeless care services, there is still 15 percent free capacity, but MÁV is also setting up additional warming areas.
Debrecen Fidelitas has also helped with cleaning roads and sidewalks.
“MÁV’s railway stations will be heated and opened as well, so beyond the fact that capacity is greater than what is currently needed, heated spaces will also be available at the stations wherever possible,” pointed out Minister Gergely Gulyás.
