DSI Debrecen Recognized Its Outstanding Athletes and Coaches

The annual DSI Debrecen gala recognizes the best athletes of the individual departments and their coaches, as well as the best female and male youth and adult athletes, Coach of the Year, and the Good Student–Good Athlete awardees.

At the event, Balázs Kövér, Head of the Mayor’s Cabinet Office, said that a city’s future can be measured in many ways – through institutions and developments – but perhaps most of all by how it treats young people and what path it shows them. “The young people present here learn perseverance through sport. This occasion is not only about results, but also about the work invested, faith, and perseverance,” he emphasized, adding that Debrecen is a city that loves sport, where sport is a shared value: it shapes character, builds community, and teaches people to fight, not only on the field but in life as well.

Nearly 1,500 young people practice sports at DSI Debrecen, where Olympians and internationally outstanding athletes emerge. According to the cabinet head, the city does everything it can to ensure that athletes are successful. He also noted that the young people present not only bring medals to the city, but also set an example for everyone.

At the gala, CEO András Becsky recalled the greatest moments, events, and achievements of the more than 25 years since the organization’s founding. “Development has not stopped since then: today we operate more than 20 sports facilities, and on a daily basis more than 350 colleagues – coaches, organizers, office staff, and maintenance workers – work to ensure that these spaces are full of life.” He emphasized that this is done to ensure continuous youth development across DSI’s 15 departments and to enrich the sports life of Debrecen and Hungary with as many events as possible.

The Athlete of the Year award went to sabre fencer Nicolas Iliász, who was also honored at the National Sports Gala, while the Coach of the Year title was awarded to handball coach Zoltán Milánik.

The Female and Male Youth Athlete of the Year awards were presented to Dóra Pusztai and Ferenc Fedora. The Team of the Year in team sports was the U15 girls’ handball team, while in individual sports it was the speed skating relay consisting of Hanna Lili Mizsák, Anna Oláh, Lilla Gyurkó, and Laura Kövér.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented this year to Mónika Szilágyiné Skoumal.
