New Director Appointed to Lead Richter’s Debrecen Plant
A leadership change has taken place at the Debrecen biotechnology site of the pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter: as of January 8 this year, Zsolt Baranyai has assumed the position of site head. The manufacturing unit operating in the Határ Road Industrial Park has been strengthening Debrecen’s economic power since 2012 and, as Hungary’s first and only biotechnology manufacturing plant, is currently still in an intensive growth phase. Thanks to the successful product registrations in 2025 and the biosimilar products expected to enter the market in the coming years, significant growth is anticipated in the volume of commercial batches manufactured at the site, both in active pharmaceutical ingredient and finished product manufacturing. Zsolt Baranyai’s experience strengthens and supports the successful realization of the growth and development goals facing the Debrecen site.
Zsolt Baranyai has more than 20 years of industrial and pharmaceutical experience. In the first half of his career, he worked in engineering, LEAN, and manufacturing roles in the energy sector, while over the past ten years he has held leadership positions in the pharmaceutical industry in sterile and aseptic, solid dosage form, and active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing environments. He has worked in, among others, operational excellence (OPEX), supply chain, project management, technology transfer, and site leadership roles, both in Hungary and Romania.
Gedeon Richter Nyrt. adopted a new long-term corporate strategy in 2025, in which domestic manufacturing bases, including the Debrecen plant, play a key role. The special role of the Debrecen site is well illustrated by the fact that it is home to Hungary’s only biotechnology facility that is also unique in the Central and Eastern European region, as cell line research and development, manufacturing, filling, and quality control processes are all carried out at a single location. Thanks to the continuous expansion of research and manufacturing capacities, the initial workforce of just a few employees has grown to nearly 700 people by today.
Three of the TOP 10 products that determine Richter’s total revenue are manufactured in Debrecen.
As part of the strategy, the company is further strengthening the leadership team of the Debrecen site with Zsolt Baranyai, in line with the plant’s growing professional and business significance.
