The Redevelopment of the Main Railway Station Is No Longer Optional

The renovation of the underpass will begin and a camera system will be installed this year, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles said on Médiacentrum Debrecen’s program HírPONT.

The development of the Nagyállomás has long been an important issue in Debrecen. Tisza Party has also voiced criticism on this matter, objecting, for example, to the delays and the lack of accessibility.

In response to a question from Zsuzsa Keserű, editor-in-chief at Médiacentrum Debrecen, the deputy mayor said that they see the problem.

Diána Széles emphasized that the development of the Main Railway Station is no longer optional. “This is a larger-scale development. We have already made complete plans to implement, but a project of this size cannot be financed by the state on its own, so we reached an agreement with the ministry on two points. One is that a smaller renovation will begin, starting with the underpasses, covering everything from accessibility to public feedback. The other point concerns the railway operational area. The ministry is considering the creation of a commercial unit, similar to KÖKI Terminal in Budapest. I have received feedback from residents living in the area that they want cameras to be installed, which we will do this year, because no one else will solve this problem if we don’t,” the deputy mayor stated.

Previously, Zsolt Hegyi, CEO of the MÁV Group, also spoke about the topic on Médiacentrum Debrecen’s program HírPONT. “We are currently working on renovating the underpass, and there are two reasons for this: the technical condition of the underpass is not what we would expect of a 21st-century underpass, and due to its condition, trains are also able to pass above it only at reduced speeds,” he revealed.
