1,400 Fifth‑Graders Learned to Swim for Free in Debrecen Schools

On February 11, fourth-grade students from the Epreskert Primary School were taught swimming at the Margit Square swimming pool. Most of them had already acquired the basics in early childhood, but there are some who have only just started getting acquainted with the water through the lessons provided by the Debrecen School District.

Epreskert students learn the basics of water safety with the help of their own physical education teacher over the course of ten swimming classes in one school year.

“The swimming course has a very strong community-building effect. Just the fact that we take the bus together, then they go into the water, warm up, play, and try out different swimming styles,” highlighted Judit Erdeiné Bujdosó, teacher at Epreskerti Primary School.

All fifth-grade students in schools maintained by the Debrecen School District Centre have the opportunity to learn to swim in the pools located in the district’s institutions. This involves 27 institutions and two branch institutions. In the first semester of the current school year, around 1,400 students from 62 classes took part in swimming.

This sport is also popular at Kazinczy Ferenc Primary School. “The maintainer provides us with time slots for this, and we always try to make full use of the time we receive. If we look at the previous and the current semester, we can say that nearly 150 children have already participated in swimming so far,” pointed out László Nádházi, principal of Kazinczy Ferenc Primary School.

The Debrecen School District Centre supports providing opportunities not only for fifth-grade students but also for other age groups and grades in schools to learn swimming during class time.
