Two More Residential Parks to Receive Community Gardens in Debrecen
Debrecen’s first community garden has been flourishing since 2020 in Vénkert, where local residents cultivate 28 plots in fourteen raised beds across 130 square metres of arable land in the park on Sinai Miklós Street.
Later, similar gardens were established in two other districts, Újkert and Tócóskert, with the aim of enabling local people to obtain healthy food through their own efforts while also building community ties. Since then, dozens of residents have continued to care enthusiastically for the plants in the raised beds. The housing estate kitchen garden was created as part of the Green City Programme.
In his recent report summarising the 2026 budget, Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs stated that the aim of building green communities is to ensure that every citizen of Debrecen who wishes to connect in some way to greening initiatives can find an area in which to become involved. “This is essentially how we created the community gardens, a process we will continue this year. Two new community gardens will be established in the Ispotály–Erzsébet block and in Tócóskert,” he announced.
As previously reported, Hungary’s most beautiful kitchen gardens have been recognised with awards for several years. In 2024, 32 gardens from 28 municipalities received awards, including the Tócóskert Community Garden, and in October 2025 the Vénkert Community Garden was named Hungary’s most beautiful kitchen garden.
Following the example of the Green City Programme, the University of Debrecen Student Community Garden has also been established – a community garden operating on the campus of the University of Debrecen, where students are also able to cultivate their own plots.
